LeBron James says Jalen Willams is one of the biggest ones for OKC

The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for a challenging first-round playoff matchup against the Houston Rockets, with Game 1 set for Saturday night on ABC. As the postseason begins, much of the focus has shifted to how teams match up across a loaded Western Conference field led by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

LeBron James, who is set to lead Los Angeles with both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sidelined, addressed the broader playoff landscape and highlighted one player he believes could significantly impact the Thunder’s title push. Speaking on the “Mind the Game” podcast, James pointed to Jalen Williams as a key variable for Oklahoma City.

“There’s not many wild cards in a lot of the postseason teams,” James said. “He’s one of the biggest ones… his ability to defend, his ability to get into the paint, his shot-making ability, is just another dynamic piece out on the floor.”

LeBron James says there’s not many wildcards with a lot of the postseason teams, Jalen Willams is one of the biggest ones for OKC:

“You know, when you’re looking at your hand, your like, “How many wildcards do I have?” He’s one of the biggest wildcards that you can look at is… https://t.co/JjzbGUJUtT pic.twitter.com/arGM1oEWoG

James emphasized that while the Thunder already have a proven star in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams adds an extra dimension that can further elevate the team.

“When he’s on the floor… it gives them another level,” James said. “They can still win… but when he’s playing at a high level… it’s just another dynamic piece.”

Williams has appeared in 33 games this season, averaging 17.1 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 48.4% from the field. His versatility on both ends of the court has made him a key part of Oklahoma City’s rotation.

James also referenced Williams’ injury history this season as one of the factors that make him unpredictable in a playoff setting. That variability, combined with his skill set, positions him as a potential difference-maker in a postseason environment where matchups and adjustments are critical.

The Thunder enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and are widely viewed as one of the top contenders. Their path to the conference finals appears favorable, with a first-round matchup against a play-in team followed by a potential second-round series against either the Lakers or Rockets.

The playoff bracket has created a notable imbalance across the Western Conference. On one side sit the Thunder, Lakers, and Rockets, while the opposite side features the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves, three of the conference’s top contenders.

This structure gives Oklahoma City a clearer path in the early rounds. Meanwhile, teams like Denver and Minnesota face more immediate challenges against each other.

For the Lakers, the situation is defined by availability. With Doncic recovering from a hamstring strain and Reaves dealing with an oblique injury, the offensive burden shifts heavily onto James. Despite those absences, Los Angeles finished the regular season strong, closing with a three-game winning streak.

Head coach JJ Redick made it clear the team remains focused on its approach rather than external expectations.

“We’re gonna prepare and we’re gonna fight and we’re gonna go try to win the series,” Redick said. “It’s not about the opponent, it’s about us… now it is about the opponent.”

The Lakers will face a Rockets team led by Kevin Durant, with additional support from Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson. Houston finished the season strong and enters the series with momentum.

Historically, the Lakers and Rockets have met multiple times in the playoffs, including a matchup in the 2020 Western Conference semifinals.

As the postseason begins, the spotlight extends beyond individual matchups to broader team dynamics. James’ assessment of Williams reflects that reality, highlighting how a single player’s impact can shift the balance in a tightly contested playoff field.

With Oklahoma City positioned as a top seed and teams like Los Angeles navigating injuries, the role of players like Williams could ultimately shape how far contenders advance in the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
