LeBron James shifted back into the leader role

The Los Angeles Lakers entered the playoffs facing major uncertainty after injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves late in the regular season. Instead of fading, Los Angeles responded with a 107-98 Game 1 win over the Houston Rockets to open its first-round series, with LeBron James once again at the center of the turnaround.

James finished Game 1 with 19 points, eight rebounds, and 13 assists in 38 minutes. It followed a stretch in which the 41-year-old forward took on a larger leadership burden as the Lakers adjusted to life without two of their top scorers.

That shift became a major talking point ahead of Game 2. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said James changed the tone internally during the final week of the regular season, helping stabilize the group before the postseason began.

Speaking on NBA Today, McMenamin detailed a team meeting in San Francisco after the Lakers lost their first two games following the injuries to Doncic and Reaves.

“I want to take you back to last week of the regular season,” McMenamin said. “The Lakers had lost their first two games after the injuries to Austin and Luka, and they’re up in San Francisco for a team meeting.”

McMenamin added that several team sources described a noticeable change in James after that moment.

“LeBron, from that moment on, kind of shifted back into the leader role and the primary role,” McMenamin said. “And basically, his tone, his focus, his attention to detail from that point through the end of the regular season, through the week of preparation, during the play-in tournament, and then through Game 1, was that of follow me.”

The Lakers needed that response. Doncic has remained sidelined with a hamstring strain, while Reaves continues recovering from an oblique injury. With two top offensive options unavailable, Los Angeles needed structure and control entering the playoffs.

McMenamin said James’ message to teammates was clear.

“If you take care of your job, I’m going to take care of my job, and we’re going to have a chance to win.”

That leadership approach helped carry into the Rockets series opener.

James did more than lead vocally in Game 1. He controlled the game as a scorer, rebounder, and playmaker.

His 13 assists helped generate a balanced offense, while the Lakers received strong support from Luke Kennard, who scored a playoff career-high 27 points, and Deandre Ayton, who added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

James’ recent form also reflects how much responsibility he has taken on. In his last five games, he has posted strong all-around numbers, including a 30-point, 15-assist outing against Dallas, a 28-point, 12-assist game against Phoenix, and the 19-point, 13-assist playoff win over Houston.

Head coach JJ Redick also praised James after the opener.

“He displayed great leadership throughout,” Redick said. “We talked all week about being connected offensively and trusting the pass. He led us there in the first half, getting 10 assists, and then was able to make some scoring plays down the stretch.”

The Lakers know one win does not decide the series. Houston could get healthier, but the pressure to maintain control in the matchup remains significant.

McMenamin made that point while discussing the bigger picture.

“Now, it doesn’t mean that them winning Game 1 means that they’re going to get automatically to the second round,” he said.

Still, he added that the Lakers believe their current formula can work.

“If they stay in this mode, and LeBron’s certainly going to set the example how to stay in this mode, they feel like they have a game plan that can get them further along in the playoffs.”

Los Angeles also continues to monitor the recoveries of Reaves and Doncic. McMenamin noted there is hope Reaves could return late in the first round, while Doncic may be an option later in the postseason.

For now, the Lakers’ path remains centered on James, whose leadership move late in the season may have reshaped their playoff outlook at exactly the right time.
