Kevin Durant looks on during the Rockets’ playoff series against the Lakers as his status for Game 4 has been leaked. Durant is dealing with an ankle injury.

The Houston Rockets may be facing Game 4 without Kevin Durant.

After days of uncertainty and an aggressive push to return, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported Sunday that Durant is expected to miss Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers as he continues to recover from a sprained ankle that includes a bone bruise.

“Houston’s Kevin Durant is expected to miss Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported. “Durant has a bone bruise in his sprained ankle, which would sideline him 2 to 3 weeks in season. He’s had around-the-clock treatment to play, but has not been cleared by doctors.

Houston’s Kevin Durant is expected to miss Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell ESPN. Durant has a bone bruise in his sprained ankle, which would sideline him 2 to 3 weeks in season. He’s had around-the-clock treatment to play but has not been cleared by doctors.

The update marks a shift from the “game-time decision” label that had followed Durant into the weekend — and it leaves Houston preparing for a must-win game without its top offensive option.

“Durant came into the Rockets facility this morning for his rehab with the team’s medical staff and participated in a film session and meetings with teammates. The bone bruise has created swelling, stiffness and lack of mobility in the ankle, sources said. Houston will face a 3-0 series deficit with Durant out tonight,” Charania added.

Kevin Durant Injury Timeline Comes Into Focus

Durant’s availability had remained uncertain after he was ruled out for Game 3, with coach Ime Udoka describing his status as “up in the air.”

Behind the scenes, Durant had been undergoing intensive rehabilitation, including around-the-clock treatment designed to reduce swelling and maintain conditioning. That work included aquatic therapy and controlled movement to limit stress on the ankle.

Ime Udoka says Kevin Durant continues to get treatment today on his left ankle.

Durant remains questionable for Sunday. Will test his ankle during shootaround tomorrow + pregame tomorrow night.

“Getting treatment still around the clock. I think there’s some soreness. [Durant]

The presence of a bone bruise alongside the sprain, however, provides added context to the delay.

In a regular-season setting, the injury would typically sideline a player for two to three weeks, making any accelerated return a challenge — particularly in a playoff environment where game speed and physical contact cannot be simulated.

Rockets Unable to Rush Durant’s Return

Despite the urgency of the situation, the Rockets have remained cautious.

Durant’s progress has been steady, but clearance ultimately depends on medical evaluation rather than timeline pressure. As of Sunday, that clearance has not been granted.

The gap between improvement and full readiness highlights the decision Houston now faces — balancing the immediate stakes of elimination with the long-term health of a veteran star.

Houston Faces Elimination Without Its Star

The Rockets enter Game 4 trailing 3-0 in the series, leaving little margin for error.

Without Durant, Houston has struggled to generate consistent offense late in games, particularly against a Lakers defense that has tightened in key moments. The absence of a primary scorer has forced younger players into expanded roles under postseason pressure.

Even with competitive stretches, the Rockets have been unable to sustain scoring runs needed to shift momentum.

Series Momentum Favors Lakers Ahead of Game 4

The Los Angeles Lakers have controlled the series, building their lead despite injuries of their own. Their depth and defensive execution have allowed them to dictate pace and close out key stretches.

For Houston, the equation is straightforward.

A win extends the series. A loss ends it.

Durant’s potential absence adds another layer to that challenge — one that could ultimately shape how the series is decided.

Durant Status Remains the Defining Variable

While the situation remains technically fluid, the latest update suggests the Rockets will again be without their most reliable scoring option.

Durant’s recovery continues, but Game 4 may arrive too soon.

And for a team already on the brink, the margin for delay is gone.
