Odorless, tasteless and invisible, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a terrifying threat — and it takes lives every year. According to the CDC, over 400 Americans die annually from unintentional CO poisoning unrelated to fires, and over 100,000 people visit emergency departments due to exposure.
CO poisoning typically occurs when unvented or poorly maintained appliances leak carbon monoxide into closed-off sleeping areas. These incidents can happen anywhere, but vacation rentals and Airbnbs are frequently cited in poisoning cases in the U.S. and abroad.
With summer travel season coming up, more people might be looking into how they can protect themselves, and carbon monoxide detectors are among the simplest and safest investments. These devices use sensors to monitor the air for CO, and if detected, they trigger a high-decibel alarm that is meant to alert the entire household. If you have travel plans, it’s not a bad idea to bring one with you.
While the EPA recommends every home have a CO detector, many short-term rentals and hotels lack basic safety protections. A 2018 study by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that only 56% of vacation rentals had a CO detector installed.
Fortunately, CO detectors are not too expensive. The Kidde carbon monoxide detector is available for around $40 on Amazon. Users say it’s affordable, portable and easy to install anywhere. Some have even claimed that it’s saved their lives.

“I mean no amount is really good but it didn’t wait until the levels were high enough to kill me in five minutes…” they shared. “Had it not been for my Kidde, I would not have woken up that morning.”
