A 17-year-old college football prospect died in a car crash late Saturday night in Florida. 

Deontavis Cooper was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in Leon County, while two 18-year-olds in the car were left in critical condition, according to WCTV. 

Cooper was an offensive lineman at Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville, Ga., and was on track to go to Tulane University.

He won two state titles while playing for Thomas County Central. 

The accident occurred just before 11 p.m. on Saturday after the sedan that Cooper was riding in went into the shoulder, struck a culvert and went airborne before eventually striking a telephone pole. 

The car rolled over and ejected Cooper from the backseat.

Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene. 

TCCHS football head coach Justin Rogers described Cooper in a Facebook post as someone “who could light up a room with his smile” and who was “loved by so many.” 

“There are no words for the heartbreak we feel today,” Rogers wrote. “Big Coop was one of those rare young men who could light up a room with his smile and make everyone around him feel valued. He loved people and treated others with kindness. 

“We were so excited to watch him begin the next chapter of his life at Tulane next week and continue pursuing his dream of playing college football. While that dream was cut far too short, the impact he made on his teammates, coaches, teachers, friends, and family will last forever.

“Big Coop was loved by so many, and he loved people right back. We are better because we all knew him.”

Cooper signed with Tulane in December, after also receiving offers from South Alabama, Cincinnati, UCF, Arkansas State and East Carolina.  

Tulane football also released a statement mourning the loss of Cooper, calling him someone who “exemplified dedication, resilience, and a positive outlook.”

“His love for the game and his unwavering work ethic showed in everything he did, and he was on the path to making a significant impact both on the field and within the community,” the statement said. “Deontavis was admired not only for his athletic ability but also for his kindness and genuine spirit. His bright personality and warm heart touched many, and his absence leaves a profound void in our hearts.

“In honoring Deontavis, let us remember him for his extraordinary spirit, his kindness, and the joy he brought to those around him. He remains forever a valued member of the Tulane community.”
