Lionel Messi’s family has confirmed that the Argentina star’s father, Jorge, is experiencing health issues and “recovering and progressing favorably.”

The 38-year-old could be seen crying after his first goal against Algeria on Tuesday, and told reporters after the match that the reaction followed “some difficult, complicated days.”

Amid rumors swirling about Jorge’s health, the family put out a statement hitting out at the “lack of sensitivity, respect, and discretion with which some individuals have treated a strictly private family matter.”

Messi’s family said that Jorge, 68, is under medical supervision, and later asked for “prudence and humanity.”

No further details were provided regarding Jorge’s health issues.

An Argentina TV host resigned from her job earlier this week after erroneously reporting that Jorge died.

“The family would also like to clarify that only Jorge’s immediate family has real and accurate information regarding his condition,” the statement reads. “Therefore, any version, statement, or information that does not come directly from the family and its official channels should not be considered valid or truthful.

“At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence, and humanity. A person’s health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media attention. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect, and concern we have received, and we ask that Jorge’s privacy, confidentiality, and personal space – as well as that of his entire family – be respected throughout this process.”

Messi was asked about his emotional reaction to the first of his three goals against Algeria, and later said that his tears were “completely unrelated to football.”

His father served as his manager and agent throughout his legendary career.

With his hat-trick against Algeria, Messi tied former Germany striker Miroslav Klose atop the all-time World Cup scoring leaderboard with 16 goals.

He’ll look to add to his tally even more against Austria on Monday.
