Nothing seemed to be off limits at Netflix‘s The Roast of Kevin Hart, including material about Sheryl Underwood‘s late husband’s suicide.
Hosted by Shane Gillis, Sunday night’s (May 10) roast welcomed a slew of comedians, athletes, and A-listers to rag on Kevin Hart—and each other— including Underwood, Tony Hinchcliffe, Chelsea Handler, and Katt Williams. Among those targeted by Gillis during his time at the mic was Underwood, whose husband died by suicide in 1990.
“Sheryl’s husband killed himself. Apparently Black does crack if it’s married to Sheryl and it jumps off a fucking roof,” he joked. “I do it for the balcony, I do it for the upper decks. Fuck all these people down here.”
While introducing Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green, Gillis said that the team’s logo is a bridge.
“Don’t show that to Sheryl’s husband. Seriously, keep that bridge away from Sheryl’s husband,” he said.
Gillis told the audience that he called Underwood the day before about the joke.
“I called her yesterday, shut up. I was really, I felt terrible about that. I had to call her,” he said. “She was crazy about it. She was crazy about it. She was like, ‘You going to make fun of my husband who fell off a bridge?’ I was like, ‘Yep.’ And speaking of Black men who once made an impact years ago, Kevin Hart.”
Hinchcliffe, who was seated next to Underwood on the dais, also cited the former The Talk co-host’s late husband’s death in his material.

“Her husband committed suicide three years into the marriage. I’ve ben sitting next to her for two hours and I have to ask, how did he last that long?” he quipped.
Despite the severity and cruel nature of the jokes, Underwood could be seen laughing onscreen. She also got Hinchcliffe back at the start of her set, telling the Kill Tony host, “Tony, you think you hurt my feelings by talking about my dead husband? My husband only died once, you die every night with them wack-ass jokes you be telling!”
Underwood previously opened up about the loss of her husband on a 2018 episode of The Talk while mourning designer Kate Spade’s death by suicide.
“I’m kinda emotional about this because, as you know, my husband killed himself,” she said at the time, per BET. “You will never know. For people who think they know. You’ll never know if it’s clinical depression. You’ll never know if it’s financial stress.”
Underwood also shared that her husband had left a note, and she said that “what the note does to the person who is still alive is, it shows that the person who is no longer alive has now had the final word. There’s nothing you can do about it now. And that pain… it doesn’t go away.”
The Roast of Kevin Hart is streaming on Netflix.
