The Old Barracks Museum is one of the nation’s last freestanding 18th-century barracks, and it brings the Colonial American world to life through interpretive programs, exhibits, and preservation. Its core mission is to allow visitors to appreciate New Jersey’s history, the diverse people who made it, and why it matters. This historic site in Trenton, New Jersey, was initially saved from ruin in 1902 and is finally ready to swing its gates open once more this year. The Old Barracks is hosting its grand reopening on July 4, 2026, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.    

After a massive, year-long restoration effort, this historic site is ready to blow the roof off what you thought you knew about New Jersey’s role in winning the war. 

The Old Barracks has been gloriously restored. They didn’t just dust the place; they fixed the roof, reinforced the balconies, and put in crucial new heating and cooling systems. All of these upgrades were completed to protect the priceless artifacts that tell the story of a fledgling nation. Members of the staff have also been hard at work behind closed doors, researching and building out three exciting new exhibits.

These new galleries — boasting themes of “Defending Community,” “Fortifying Liberty” and “Ongoing Revolutionaries” — aren’t just old-school history lessons. They detail how winning the Battles of Trenton (yes, there were two!) inspired the entire Revolution and shaped our memory of New Jersey’s vital role. The exhibits take you from the Lenape people through to the French and Indian War, right up to the present day, showing how Trenton remains a source of inspiration.

The museum is also putting George Washington’s Inaugural Flower Arch on display for the first time in decades. This isn’t some dusty replica, either. It’s the original historic arch that the man himself marched under when he crossed Trenton. It was a symbol of hope and faith in the American Revolution, and now it’s back to inspire a new generation.

Think Revolution history meets block party. There will be fun for the whole family with activities like face painting, balloon animals, a bubble show and a musical performance by the Blawenburg Band titled “Listening to the Revolution: 250 Years of American Music.” 

Grab some grub from Gita’s Mobile Cafe, Memos Foodtruck, or Rainbow Snow, while the 1719 William Trent House Museum and the New Jersey State Museum also host activities. The Trent House is bringing an “Eyewitness to Revolution” game, and the State Museum is letting guests make interactive button crafts inspired by their “Spirit of ‘76” exhibit.

But this Founders Day is about more than just fun: It’s a tribute to the power of determined women. In 1902, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames organized to save this barracks and turned it into the museum it is today just one year later in 1903. Founders Day honors the unique history of one of the nation’s last freestanding Colonial barracks while honoring the women who fought to preserve the site.

The Old Barracks Museum is also running two key fundraising efforts to support its operations and the opening of new exhibits for America’s 250th anniversary. The first is a unique George Washington Inaugural Flower Arch Fundraiser, where a temporary, full-scale reproduction of the historic arch Washington marched under will be created and covered in hand-dyed wood flowers, with each flower representing a donor. 

Additionally, the museum is encouraging a symbolic donation of $17.76, which directly supports the museum and grants the donor one free admission ticket for the Grand Opening celebration on July 4, 2026. Those who contribute at this level by June 30, 2026, will also have their names inscribed on a “Declaration of Donors” displayed at the museum.

Finally, for the hardcore history buffs, 2026 culminates with Patriots Week, running from December 26 to 31. Residents and tourists alike can experience reenactments of the events that shaped our nation, all here in Trenton, New Jersey. Expect a Colonial Ball, street reenactments of the Battles of Trenton (fights that truly shaped our destiny) and interactive puppet shows that make history fun again. This is truly the Revolutionary grand finale to an unforgettable 250th anniversary year.
