The fictional pop star in the new David Lowery film, Mother Mary—opening wide in theaters this weekend—finds herself in times of trouble, and is hoping a beautiful dress made by her ex-best friend will fix things.

Written and directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight, Pete’s Dragon), Mother Mary stars Anne Hathaway as a Lady Gaga-esque pop star who is returning to stage after a long hiatus. But the look her team has picked out for her big comeback feels all wrong. So, Mother Mary turns to her former stylist, costume designer, and ex-best friend Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) and begs for a new dress.

Also starring Hunter Schafer, FKA Twigs, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and Alba Baptista, Mother Mary is a surreal, dreamy rumination on broken friendships, ghosts, depression, and healing. It’s worth seeing on the big screen for the stunning visual experience, but if, for some reason, you’d rather wait to watch the movie at home, then read on to find out what we know about when and where the Mother Mary movie will be streaming.

Where to watch Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary movie:

For now, Mother Mary will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in theaters nationwide in the U.S. on Friday, April 24. (The film opened in select theaters last Friday.) You can find a showing near you via Fandango. Mother Mary is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.

Is the Mother Mary movie streaming on Netflix?

Mother Mary is not streaming on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix in the U.S. any time soon, due to the fact that the film is being released by A24 in the U.S., and the 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, brings all A24’s previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the Warner Bros. streaming service HBO Max. If you want to watch Mother Mary at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on HBO Max.

If you’re new to HBO Max, you can sign up for as low as $10.99/month with ads, but an ad-free subscription will cost $18.49/month.

If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the discounted Disney+ Bundles with Hulu and HBO Max. With ads, the bundle costs $19.99/month and without ads, $32.99/month.

When will the Mother Mary movie be streaming on HBO Max?

You might see the Mother Mary movie streaming on HBO Max around late August 2026.

Mother Mary is not yet streaming on HBO Max. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. That said, we do expect to see Mother Mary streaming on HBO Max eventually—thanks to the A24 and Warner Bros. deal—but we’re not sure when.

The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights Mother Mary, after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, Marty Supreme, will begin streaming on HBO Max this Friday, a little over four months after its release in theaters, and about two-and-a-half months after its release on digital.

If Mother Mary follows a similar release strategy, you might see Mother Mary on digital in about a month, around late May 2026, and streaming on HBO Max in about four months, around late August 2026.

This is all speculation. The A24 digital and streaming releases have varied by title. If you want to watch Mother Mary right away, you can catch the movie everywhere in U.S. theaters on Friday.
