But buying a new HVAC in the middle of a heat wave can put you in a tight position. You may feel rushed, and since you’re probably not the only one with the same issue, contractors are busier than usual, and appointment slots may be limited.
That does not mean you should suffer through the heat. If your home is dangerously hot, especially if you have elderly family members, young kids, pets or anyone with health conditions, getting help quickly matters. But when it comes to a major HVAC purchase, experts say the worst time to make a big decision is when you are desperate.
“If a customer is calling with a need and they’re in distress because their system is broken — and let’s say that it’s 105 degrees outside — they need somebody there right now,” says Josh Conder, division operations manager for ARS Central Division. “We can’t say, ‘All right, we’ll get out there next week. Just sweat for the next week.’ That doesn’t work well.”
That said, hoping for a quicker turnaround can only mean one thing: higher cost. Here’s what to keep in mind to avoid that and what to do instead:

That urgency can make it harder to slow down and compare your options. You might accept the first available quote without thinking things through.

According to ARS, two HVAC quotes for the same home can come in thousands of dollars apart, and it’s typically not because one contractor is overcharging. ARS points to equipment tier, efficiency rating, install complexity, and whether work like ductwork or electrical upgrades is included.
Sometimes the cheapest and fastest option isn’t always the best.

It’s easy to think when you’re sweating bullets that a larger HVAC system will get you cooling faster, but that’s a common mistake.
“First of all, it needs to be sized properly,” says Gregory Milich, an HVAC expert and college instructor with 43 years of experience. “You can’t just take a three-ton system out and put a four-ton system in because the customer says, ‘I just want more air conditioning.’ It does not work that way.”
If a system is too small, it’s going to struggle to cool your home, but if it’s too large for your space, your room will struggle with humidity issues.
That is why a proper evaluation matters. “We go to the home and do a full energy analysis and a heat-load calculation to determine what really works best for their individual situation, as opposed to just throwing out a blanket price and hoping that it works,” Conder says.

“A lot of the real problems come from ductwork,” says Joey Dooley, a general manager at ARS in Texas. “If the ducts are installed improperly, if there are restrictions, if things are sealed badly, then you’re not getting the efficiency you paid for. For example, we can change to higher-efficiency equipment, but if the airflow and duct system aren’t right, you’re not going to get that full efficiency.”
In other words, even a brand-new HVAC system can underperform if the ductwork is leaking, restricted, poorly sealed or not sized correctly.

“An HVAC system is not complete until it’s installed correctly,” says Scott Urquhart, an HVAC sales and customer experience expert. “Whether it’s the greatest equipment with the greatest warranty in the world, or it’s the cheapest equipment you’ve ever found or heard of, you have to install it correctly. And if you don’t, you’re going to have problems.”
Dooley says the same thing applies to performance.
“I tell people all the time that the equipment can be great, but if the installation is bad, the performance will be bad,” he says.
During a heat wave, you might be hoping for a rush job, but it’s better for the contractor to take their time. This way you know they’re not ignoring ductwork, sealing, wiring protection or thermostat setup.
When your house is hot, you may focus only on the temperature. But comfort is not just about cooling. Humidity matters too.
“Air conditioning is dehumidification with a byproduct of cooling,” Milich says. “So air conditioning is basically dehumidifying the air.”
If a system is too big or not installed properly, your home can feel sticky, even if the thermostat says the temperature is perfect.
Milich also warns that homeowners should not simply shut off their system when they are not home.
“It doesn’t just have to do with cooling,” he says. “It’s the humidity that will hurt — not hurt you, but hurt your belongings in your house. Humidity soaks into everything.”
That’s an even bigger issue when it’s hot outside.

“The importance of maintenance may change a little depending on where you are in the U.S., but biannual maintenance is the baseline,” says Dooley. “Almost every manufacturer recommends it, and I can tell you that a lot of them also effectively require maintenance if you want to protect your warranty.”
If your system is older, noisy, running constantly, failing to control humidity or needing frequent repairs, start getting quotes before the hottest part of the year. That gives you more time to compare options and ask questions without pressure.
