The 'Supernatural' Reunion Finally Happens This Week On '...

It’s a sad day in Hollywood. Or, at least it is in The Boys.

This week’s episode of The Boys finally features the highly anticipated Supernatural reunion that fans have been waiting on since Jensen Ackles joined the show’s cast in Season 3.

The Boys Season 5, Episode 5 takes some major creative swings that ultimately pay off. Not only does it jump between the perspectives of Firecracker, Black Noir and Butcher’s dog Terror, but the episode also takes viewers to Hollywood, where Homelander and Soldier Boy meet up with former supe and the “fastest dealer in town,” Mister Marathon, to hunt down some V1. It would be easy to describe the episode as overstuffed but, somehow, every plot development sends the storyline hurtling towards the finale, which is only weeks away.

But it also features the show’s best-kept secret so far: Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins aren’t the only celebrities who make an appearance.

Ackles told DECIDER series creator Eric Kripke wanted to “torture” Padalecki and Collins “like he tortures the rest of us.”

“It is disgusting and outrageous. And you guys, you know, I hope you like it – for their sake,” Ackles said at the time ahead of the Season 5 premiere.

And this prediction certainly paid off. Padalecki is absolutely drenched in blood by the end of his short-lived stint as super-speed supe Mister Marathon. Meanwhile, Collins died a swift but painful death as the supe Malchemical, who is capable of making deadly gases. The pair offer a glimpse at what life could look like for supes who haven’t been deputized by Vought. And, by the looks of Mister Marathon’s Vought and The Seven memorabilia, – not to mention the gallons of Puff Baby Oil the show classily included as a jab at Diddy’s freak-offs – it looks pretty pathetic.

In this week’s episode, Homelander and Soldier Boy unknowingly walk into a celebrity poker game, featuring some of the biggest names in comedy and hosted by Mister Marathon and Malchemical. The Boys Season 5 cameos add Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Robinson and Will Forte to the list, who are all bickering about what they should do to combat the Starlighter raids that have been wreaking havoc on Hollywood. But, for some of these celebs, it’s been a blessing in disguise.

“Best day of my life was when they executed [Bill] Hader,” Forte declares at one point, saying it’s helped him land more roles. This is inspiring enough for Mintz-Plasse, who is more than willing to throw his Superbad co-star Michael Cera under the bus for the chance at a new role.

“Do you think Michael Cera’s a Starlighter? Because we’re up for the same part right now and it’d be pretty good if he got vanished,” he says.

This week’s meta episode satirizes Hollywood, revealing exactly what these celebs think of each other and the cutthroat world of acting. It goes straight for the jugular when Homelander dismisses Mister Marathon’s superhero movies because they were made by Sony Pictures, “where washed up supes go to die,” instead of Vought Studios.

The episode offers a refreshing glimpse at what life is like outside of Vought Tower or whatever hideaway Butcher and the Boys are hiding in. Watching Forte go back and forth with Rogen and Nanjiani is just as eye-opening as watching Teenage Kix raid the homes of alleged Starlighters in Episode 2.

The actors happily lean into the hypocrisy of their actions. They’re quick to cover to Homelander right after bickering about Vought’s “fascist” crackdown. Nanjiani and Rogen reveal the supes have already “rounded up” Aziz Ansari, Macaulay Culkin, Joaquin Phoenix, Kiefer Sutherland, and both of the Benedicts – Wong and Cumberbatch – for being suspected Starlighters. Rogen is also the one who suggests they share black squares on social media to take a stand against Vought, but he’s quick to tell Homelander that he will also be testifying before Congress to out even more Starlighters (in this case, it’s Post Malone). These might be some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood to us viewers, but to Homelander, they’re practically gum under his shoe.

Either way, the celebs get their just desserts, as do Malchemical and Mister Marathon. Soldier Boy is not known for being a merciful supe. After Mister Marathon and Malchemical fail to convince him to turn on Homelander, Soldier Boy causes a bloody rampage.

Mister Marathon chases Soldier Boy through the Hollywood mansion at full speed, which Soldier Boy uses to his advantage by placing each of these dimwitted celebrities in his path, killing every single one of them in the process. What results is a hilarious, bloody mess for Padalecki.

The Boys creator Eric Kripke, who also created Supernatural, called the episode a “cameo-palooza.”

It’s clear the actors had a blast filming this episode, even if their last shot at appearing in The Boys was for a brief cameo that resulted in their bloody deaths. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ackles recounted “the hilarity” of filming the sequence.

“There were so many takes ruined because of people breaking and not being able to keep their s— together. So, yes, it was difficult to film, but not for the reasons that most people think,” he said.

New episodes of The Boys air Wednesdays on Prime Video.
