MLS commissioner Don Garber said his X account was “compromised” on Wednesday night when a fiery reply from his social media account called a Canadian politician a “liar, liar pants on fire.”

The peculiar situation comes at a time when there is a fight over the future of the Vancouver Whitecaps and locals are working to keep the team in the Canadian city. 

British Columbia Premier David Eby posted a 45-second video message on his X account that his government was “fighting hard to save the Whitecaps,” who are at risk of being relocated. 

Garber’s account replied using the juvenile insult, later deleted, and an hour after it first appeared, the MLS commish posted on social media that his account had been hacked. 

“My account was compromised earlier this evening. The issue has been resolved. I appreciate Premier Eby for taking the time to meet with me today,” Garber wrote. 

MLS executive vice president of communications, Dan Courtemanche, also addressed the bizarre situation in a social media post of his own, saying that Garber had been “hacked and did not post this.”

A league spokesperson told ESPN that it was a “random person” who posted the response, but did not explain how they had gotten access to the MLS commissioner’s account. 

Tensions are high in Vancouver as fans and local leaders have been fighting to keep the club in the city. 

The Whitecaps have been up for sale since December 2024, and the club has said that despite conversations with more than 100 interested parties, “no viable offer has emerged that would keep the club here.”

MLS would prefer to keep the club in Vancouver, but multiple reports this week indicated that a subcommittee of league owners has met to discuss what was happening with the Whitecaps and the possibility of relocation. 

On Thursday, a group of investors led by Grant Gustavson, the son of billionaire Tamara Gustavson, made a formal offer to buy the Whitecaps and move the team to Las Vegas, ESPN reported. 

Vegas is among the locations that the subcommittee discussed for the possible relocation of the Whitecaps.
