Survivor 50 came to a dramatic conclusion this week when the Survivor winner and the Sia Fan Favorite were crowned, marking the end of an action-packed anniversary season.
The 50th season challenged 24 returning players to compete in a variety of challenges on the islands of Fiji for the chance to win $1 million. At the mercy of the island, and the fans, these castaways had to build alliances and figure out who they can and cannot trust as every week brought new challenges.
The season featured many all-time fan favorites, including infamous Survivor contestant and The White Lotus series creator Mike White, as well as iconic contestants such as Cirie Fields, Rizo Velovic, Christian Hubicki and Ozzy Lusth. And fans were flocking to catch the Survivor 50 finale, which reportedly an average of 5.78 million viewers according to Nielsen ratings, making it the show’s most-watched season finale since 2020.
But the finale suffered a major gaffe when host Jeff Probst accidentally spoiled that Rizo’s Survivor journey had come to an end. Rizo had lost a fire-making challenge that could have earned him a spot in the Top 3, but Probst spoiled the news by announcing it during the live portion of the show before the challenge had aired for the audience.
“Rizo, you’ve become the final member of our jury. Take a spot over here. This is it,” he said during the live broadcast, directing Velovic towards where the other eliminated contestants were sitting. “These are the people — their games fell a little short but this is the group that is going to figure out.”
There was a collective gasp when the audience realized this meant Velovic had been eliminated from the show. “What just happened?” Probst asked. The contestants had to explain to Probst that the audience still hadn’t seen the fire-making challenge, which means he had spoiled Velovic’s elimination too early.
Probst addressed the gaffe during a visit to CBS Mornings after the three-hour Survivor 50 finale aired. Probst admitted, “We have a big team, mistakes happen. We just got ahead of ourselves. And none of us saw it.”
