When the end credits roll on Rooster Episode 10, fans will be celebrating long-overdue break-ups between Katie (Charly Clive) and Archie (Phil Dunster) and Archie and Sunny (Lauren Tsai), cheering on Greg’s (Steve Carell) decision to stay at Ludlow College another semester, and wondering where the heck that last-minute Beth (Connie Britton) reveal leaves Walt (John C. McGinley). So what comes next?
Is Walt leaving his dearly beloved Ludlow? Will Sunny be back on campus next semester? Will Greg and Dylan (Danielle Deadwyler) ever attempt to become more than friends? And how will Greg and Beth navigate campus together? We’re eager for answers from HBO’s new hit comedy! The question is, will we get them? And if so, when?!
Is there a new episode of Rooster on tonight, Sunday, May 17? How many episodes are in Rooster Season 1? Will there be a Rooster Episode 11? Will there be a Rooster Season 2 on HBO and HBO Max? And if so, what could a sophomore season of the series look like?
Here’s everything we know about the future of Rooster, including a Season 2 renewal status, updates from co-creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, streaming info, and more.
Unfortunately, no. If fans are hoping to catch a new episode of Rooster on Sunday, May 17, they’re out of luck. Why? Well…
Rooster Season 1 consists of ten episodes.
Nope! Just as Ludlow College’s staff and students are taking holiday break, Rooster is going on hiatus. Since Rooster Season 1 only has ten, Episode 10, “Songs for Raisa,” which premiered on Sunday, May 10 was the Season 1 finale. Read on for Season 2 info!
You bet! On April 9, Rooster landed an early Season 2 renewal from HBO, which was absolutely no surprise considering what a record-breaking success the comedy has become since its premiere earlier this year. As Deadline reported, “the series premiere delivered 2.4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers in its first three days of availability, the largest audience for an HBO comedy debut in the U.S. in almost 11 years.”
“It’s been heartening to feel the audience embrace Rooster, as we did when we first saw Steve, Bill and Matt bring this character to life,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series. “Along with our partners at WBTV and Doozer, we’re looking forward to seeing what Ludlow’s Spring Semester has in store for this incredible comedy ensemble.”

Since Rooster Season 1 just wrapped, an official Rooster Season 2 premiere date has yet to be announced, but with any luck, fans will see new episodes in 2027. Why? Because we got a hopeful update from Roosters co-creators, who say they’ve been writing Season 2 for “quite a while.” Read on for more info!
Rooster’s Season 1 finale featured major break-ups and shake-ups, with Greg deciding to stay at Ludlow another semester, Archie dumping Sunny to be with Katie only for Katie to dump Archie, and Beth getting Walt’s job as president of the university. As noted, Rooster Season 2 will pick up after winter break and focus on Spring Semester, which means we’ll see Beth transition into her new role, Walt transition out, Greg navigate campus with his ex fully present, and the aftermath of the Archie/Sunny/Katie love triangle coming to an end.
When Lawrence and Tarses talked to Decider about Season 1’s finale, they stressed that no series regulars — not even John C. McGinley — are leaving ahead of Season 2. In fact, more fresh faces will be coming to college! “There’s a bunch of new people that we love coming into the world. But the trickiest thing on this show is you introduce 1,000 secondary characters, and whether it was Tommy (Maximo Salas), or Cristle (Annie Mumolo), or Donnie the cop (Rory Scovel), or Mo (Robby Hoffman), all of them are so good. So the biggest thing for us is trying to find room for this true ensemble piece. Currently we’ve got everybody coming back,” Lawrence explained.
