Should I Marry A Murderer? is a three-part docuseries, directed by Josh Allott, explores how Caroline Muirhead, a pathologist from Glasgow, met and fell in love with Sandy McKellar after meeting him on Tinder in 2020. But almost as soon as they got engaged, McKellar admitted to Muirhead that he and his brother killed and buried someone three years prior.

SHOULD I MARRY A MURDERER?: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A scene of two people happily running in a field, with the hills of the Scottish highlands in the background.

The Gist: Most of the Should I Marry A Murderer? is told via an interview with Caroline Muirhead, as she discusses how she met Sandy McKellar after the shocking breakup of a nine-year relationship. She laughs and smiles at the recollection of their first date, which took place on the remote highland farm where he worked. The two of them clicked immediately, with the biggest draw for Muirhead was that McKellar loved when she was just being herself. Given how controlling her last boyfriend was, that was a huge plus in her book.

They got engaged only after a few months, which shocked Muirhead’s friends and family. But what McKellar told her right after the got engaged was more shocking: Three years earlier, he and his brother hit and killed a cyclist while driving drunk. Instead of reporting the accident, they decided to bury the man’s body on the farm’s property. After that Muirhead was conflicted about whether to report the account to the police, even having McKellar show her where they buried the body before she called. Surprisingly, though, the admission didn’t change how she felt about McKellar.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Would You Marry A Murderer? reminds us of the Paramount+ docuseries Don’t Date Brandon.

Our Take: Generally, we’re a little skeptical when a true crime docuseries relies so heavily relies on the perspective of just one person. But we couldn’t stop watching Caroline Muirhead go on her emotional roller coaster as she recounts meeting and falling for Sandy McKellar, and the obvious conflict she still feels about what he told her and how she reacted.

Whether we’re seeing her in the current-day interview or in her social media videos, Muirhead is a dynamic presence, a highly intelligent and self-aware person who knew that the speed with which her relationship with McKellar progressed would turn heads. But she knew she wanted the opposite of the relationship that had just ended, and reveled in the notion that McKellar really made her feel seen and loved for who she is.

The major dilemma comes after she turns him in, however, when police release McKellar and his brother when they can’t find enough evidence to hold him. At this point, she needs to stay at his side while trying to figure out how to get him to record a confession. Given how fascinating it was to watch Muirhead recall the beginnings of the story to Allott, it’ll be even more interesting to hear her account of the torture she put herself through after her fiancé was released from custody.

Performance Worth Watching: We already mentioned why Caroline Muirhead was so compelling to watch, and she definitely strikes a sympathetic tone in her interview.

Sex And Skin: None.

Parting Shot: We see a reenactment of a SWAT team invading a house party and arresting McKellar and his brother.

Sleeper Star: Muirhead’s parents, Stephen and Margaret, are very blunt about how shocking Caroline’s engagement was, but they also did a lot to make McKellar feel welcome when he visited.

Most Pilot-y Line: The series leans heavily on reenactments, which is always a distraction. Given that it also features texts and social media posts, as well as Muirhead’s own videos, it seems unnecessary.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Yes, Should I Marry A Murderer? is completely one-sided. But Caroline Muirhead is so compelling to listen to as she recalls this harrowing story that we hung on her every word.
