A young bodybuilding influencer was found collapsed in his kitchen just weeks before he was due to enter one of Brazil’s biggest competitions, with police treating his death as suspicious.

The body of Gabriel Ganley, 22, was discovered face-down on the floor of his apartment in Sao Paulo on Saturday, reported CNN Brasil — with possible anabolic steroids found nearby.

“No apparent signs of violence were found at the scene,” the Sao Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) said, adding that a friend found the body after getting building staff to break down the door when they hadn’t heard from Ganley since Thursday.

It wasn’t clear exactly when Ganley — who was preparing to compete in July’s Musclecontest Brazil, the country’s biggest bodybuilding tournament — had died.

The case was registered as “suspicious death – sudden death” while forensics looked into the case.

No official cause of death has been given, but the forensics team seized several medications, including possible anabolic steroids, from the apartment, reported Brazilian outlet NCS Total, citing the police report.

It was also reported that Ganley may have suffered a hypoglycemic episode caused by a lack of glucose in the blood, according to a report from Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

Hypoglycemia can occur as a side effect of some types of treatment, for example, the use of insulin or when a steroid user stops taking the drug.

Ganley’s mother said in a statement she last spoke to her son on Thursday night, adding that he told her he was fine and reported no health problems or symptoms.

The young influencer had no history of heart disease, his mother claimed.

Ganley regularly shared details of his training and diet routine with his 2.3 million Instagram followers, going by the nickname “Bebezinho” (Little Baby).

In a previous post, he had complained about suffering chest pains, shortness of breath, pneumonia, and fluid in the lungs after gaining almost 44 pounds of muscle in a few days, reported NCS Total.

He had previously advocated for so-called “natural bodybuilding,” meaning no performance-enhancing drugs, but later admitted using anabolic steroids.

Integral Medica, a protein supplement brand that sponsored Ganley, issued a statement following his death.

“Today, the pain speaks louder (…) we lost much more than a talented and dedicated athlete with a bright future ahead. We lost a sports influencer who inspired thousands of young people daily with his energy, discipline, and authenticity,” the statement read.

“Ganley left his mark wherever he went. His charisma, his presence, and his passion for life will remain alive in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing him and walking alongside him,” the statement continued.
