ESPN host Mike Greenberg had an on-air gaffe not once but twice as the No. 27 pick was announced during the live broadcast of the 2026 NFL Draft on Thursday night.

Greenberg, who teed up the pick as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell walked to the podium, was clearly unaware that the Dolphins traded up from the No. 30 overall selection to No. 27 in a deal with the 49ers.

“And the commissioner making his way to the podium here for the 49ers’ selection at 27,” Greenberg said on ESPN.

“With the 27th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Chris Johnson, defensive back, San Diego State,” Goodell said.

Despite Goodell announcing that Miami drafted Johnson, an Eastvale, Calif. native, Greenberg still had it in his mind that Johnson was headed to California.

“Alright, so the California kid stays in California,” Greenberg said as ESPN showed Johnson sporting his Dolphins hat while at his hometown draft party.

“Grew up in Long Beach, then a two-year starter at San Diego State, where he was the Mountain West Co-Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.”

The title bar at the bottom of the screen even had the Dolphins’ selection displayed.

In Greenberg’s defense, someone at ESPN or a producer should’ve given him a heads up — but mistakes happen all the time in live television.

Greenberg’s hosting resume speaks for itself.

The Worldwide Leader has trusted him as the host of the network’s Thursday and Friday night NFL draft coverage since 2021.

Greenberg, who has been the host of ESPN’s morning show “Get Up” since its 2018 debut, was named the host of “Sunday NFL Countdown,” the premier NFL pregame show, in 2024.

He was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters’ Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2016 and the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2018.
