Mating Season may be about dating and romance in the animal kingdom, but the show manages to hit a couple of topics that feel a bit too close to home.
That much is true for actress June Diane Raphael, whose character Fawn dates several bachelors in her search for Mr. Right. There’s Dylan, the wolf who can’t be tamed; Arnold, the obnoxious mountain goat; or her father’s friend Charles, who she met at her mother’s funeral. Fawn doesn’t have the greatest taste in men but, as she says in Episode 5 to her friend who just had a baby and revels in her terrible dating stories, “It’s rough out here.”
But Fawn puts her heart on her sleeve in the Season 1 finale with a heartbreaking twist that Raphael told DECIDER she could certainly relate to.
“I thought it was really great,” Raphael said of the finale during a recent joint interview with her Mating Season cast mates Nick Kroll, Zach Woods and Sabrina Jalees. “I remember when I was in the dating pool. I mean, not too long ago. I’m still very young and youthful.”
**Major spoilers for the Mating Season Season 1 finale ahead!**
Just ahead of the season finale, Fawn runs into her ex-boyfriend Dylan (voiced by Timothy Olyphant) while he’s out celebrating his bachelor party. Much to her surprise, he’s been domesticated, and he’s doing all of the things she asked of him for his new fianceé. After they share a meaningful kiss and a beautiful moment in a waterfall, Fawn’s friends encourage her to confess her feelings for him and stop his wedding from happening. But her objection during the ceremony doesn’t go according to plan when she learns she wasn’t the only woman he cheated on his fianceé with.
Raphael said she could resonate with Fawn’s heartbreak in Episode 10.

“He’s with someone else, and I have to accept that,” she said of Fawn’s experience.
Fawn’s storyline in the Season 1 finale reminded Raphael of her own “really, really bad” dating experience she had with someone she was “absolutely desperately in love with.”
“I had a boyfriend I was absolutely desperately in love with, and I thought we were getting back together. He took me out to lunch, and I thought he was gonna invite me to his sister’s wedding, and he asked me to babysit his nephews,” she told DECIDER, earning groans from her cast mates.
“Yeah, really bad. Really, really bad,” she commented. “But I remember that feeling of like, Oh God, am I going to be okay? Like, is it going to work out for me? Maybe it doesn’t work out for everybody. And some people don’t find romantic love and find other types.”
Luckily for Raphael, it did. The actress is now married to actor Paul Scheer and the couple share two children.
As for Fawn, it remains to be seen what will happen to this lovesick doe in Season 2.
Mating Season is streaming now on Netflix.
