The Los Angeles Rams find themselves at the center of multiple high-profile wide receiver conversations this offseason with trade buzz, internal uncertainty and lingering free-agent speculation all converging around Sean McVay’s high-powered offense.

The biggest storyline continues to swirl around Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown, as NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported the Rams were actually closer than most realized to landing the All-Pro receiver earlier in the offseason.

“That was really close,” Garafolo said on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

“It was closer than it got with the Patriots.”

Garafolo added that at one point, a deal even looked ready to come together before ultimately stalling due to what he described as “too many moving parts.” But Garofolo went on to say he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Los Angeles re-engages in talks once again.

A part of Garafolo’s reasoning revolves around one of the Rams biggest stars.

“Look, we don’t know what’s happening with Puka Nacua this offseason, and you hope for the best for him,” Garofolo said. “But that certainly might be a factor at play here because you don’t know — can you rely on him? We don’t know what’s happening off the field with him.”

Nacua’s offseason has unquestionably added some uncertainty to the Rams’ receiver outlook heading into 2026, both because of off-field scrutiny and his looming contract situation. Earlier this spring, Nacua checked into a rehab facility following allegations he bit a woman while intoxicated on New Year’s Eve.

This capped a bizarre run of dubious actions which included appearing on a livestream with controversial influencer Adin Ross, where he made an antisemitic gesture, challenged the motives of NFL officials and questioned the legitimacy of concussions.

Compounding the uncertainty is Nacua’s contract status. The breakout star is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is now eligible for a major extension that could place him among the highest-paid receivers in football. Talks have not yet publicly progressed, sparking further speculation about how the Rams view Nacua’s place on the team

This context matters in a McVay ecosystem that prioritizes alignment between talent and culture. As McVay recently explained on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast.

“I think fit and vision is such a big thing that we’ve really looked for with players here. And sometimes you’ve got to look at somebody and say, ‘Man, this guy could be really good, but let’s let him be great for somebody else. I’ve heard it said before, production breeds tolerance. But there are still certain non-negotiables — what’s your football character like? What’s your mental and physical toughness?”

That philosophy shapes how the Rams approach high-end additions as they operate in a clear win-now window around 38-year-old reigning MVP QB Matthew Stafford. The question is has Nacua’s production bred enough tolerance within the Rams building to overshadow his decision making.

Brown is not the only star receiver linked to Los Angeles. League chatter has also connected the Rams to veteran wideout Stefon Diggs, who remains the most prominent free-agent receiver available. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero recently floated the idea on “The Rich Eisen Show,” noting he was “spitballing” rather than reporting anything concrete.

“The fact that they told Davante Adams that they might trade him,” Pelissero said. “Because they were close to getting an A.J. Brown deal done until they pulled the plug on that. Puka Nacua has had a lot going on this offseason… could Diggs to the Rams make sense?”

The Rams’ receiver room, meanwhile, remains productive but fluid without a clear third option in the room and Adams entering his 13th season.

While the team has shown confidence in its current group, the combination of trade whispers around Brown, speculation about Diggs, and uncertainty surrounding Nacua’s long-term situation ensures the position will remain under a microscope.

For a franchise that has never been shy about aggressive roster swings, the coming months could determine whether Los Angeles stays patient or finally pulls the trigger on another blockbuster move.
