Mike Francesa’s ‘witness protection’ callout for Steve Co...

The Mets are a mortal embarrassment, and while Carlos Mendoza was fired on Friday, Mike Francesa wants to hear from the head honcho.

“The idea that you’re not going to have accountability on this franchise is a joke,” Francesa said on his eponymous podcast in the wee hours on Thursday. “I’m going right past Mendoza, because I don’t care he’s small potatoes. I’m going right past [David] Stearns because in the grand scheme of things, he’s small potatoes. And [I’m going] right to the owner.

“The owner going on five-and-a-half years ago with a big wallet and a big mouth and made big promises and now he’s in the witness protection program. Doesn’t work that way. Get off your rearend. Get up and stand up. Face the music. Get into a press conference, make some statements about your team, and answer some questions from the media about where you’re headed.”

The Mets will have Andy Green as the interim manager while the team looks to figure out how to turn this nightmare season around.

Cohen hasn’t been heard from much at all during the Mets’ nightmare season, where they currently sit at 34-47.

The billionaire offered standard remarks in the press release announcing Mendoza’s firing.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment. He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best,” Cohen said. “Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”

Francesa pointed out that Cohen talked a big game when he took over in November of 2020 from the Wilpons, who constantly drew the ire of Mets fans for their penny-pinching ways.

“If we don’t win a championship in three-to-five years, I would consider it a big disappointment,” Francesa said, reminiscing on what Cohen boasted in Nov. 2020. “I didn’t buy this team to be mediocre.”

“Well, right now, mediocre would be such a step up that you can’t even get there,” Francesa added.

“He also said that ‘I will hold my team accountable.’ Well, when exactly does that happen?”

Francesa then went on a tirade against the Mets’ President of Baseball Operations, insulting Stearns’ press conferences, calling him a “complete lightweight” and saying he “doesn’t want to hear him anymore.”

“This team is completely done,” Francesa said. “You could’ve put a fork in them a month ago. They are a joke. They send a guy to the mount that you’re hoping will not get killed every night.

“Right now, your franchise is a complete and utter disgrace.”

And it doesn’t sound like Mendoza’s firing will be close to enough to satisfy Francesa.
