In Lee Child’s Reacher novels, one of the character’s most recognizable trademarks is also one of his simplest: when everyone else is talking, Reacher often isn’t. Instead of giving us a long-winded response, Child’s narration famously cuts to the chase with three words: “Reacher said nothing.”

Turns out, Alan Ritchson may be taking that same energy into his next action role — and then turning it up even further.

The first trailer for Motor City is here, and it introduces Ritchson’s John Miller as a man who doesn’t need many words to make his point. The upcoming revenge thriller is set in 1970s Detroit and follows Miller, a working-class man whose life is completely derailed after he’s framed for a drug crime and sent to prison. The betrayal costs him his freedom, his future, and his relationship with his fiancée Sophia (Shailene Woodley).

Naturally, prison changes him.

When Miller eventually gets out, he’s no longer the same man who went in. The trailer shows Ritchson trading his ’70s hairstyle for a much more intimidating look as he transforms into a focused, physically imposing force with one thing on his mind: revenge.

What makes Motor City stand out, though, is what it seems to be leaving out. There’s no endless exposition, no character constantly explaining their motivations, and no need for its hero to spell everything out. Director Potsy Ponciroli appears to be leaning into a more old-school style of action filmmaking, where the mood, the performances, and the violence tell the story.

And honestly, putting Ritchson at the center of a movie like this makes a lot of sense. The actor has already mastered playing characters who carry themselves with a certain confidence and intensity, but Motor City seems to take that idea somewhere different. Instead of relying on dialogue, the movie appears to let Ritchson’s physical performance do the heavy lifting.

That’s something Reacher fans should appreciate. Part of what made Jack Reacher such a popular character is that his silence is often just as powerful as his words. Being quiet doesn’t mean being clueless — sometimes it means the character already knows exactly what he’s going to do.

According to co-star Ben Foster, audiences can expect Motor City to fully embrace that approach. In 2024, Foster described the film as “virtually silent,” which feels like a pretty fitting description for a revenge story built around a man who has already lost everything.

Ritchson certainly doesn’t need to prove he can command attention. But there’s something exciting about seeing an action movie trust its star enough to say less. Sometimes the strongest statement a character can make is simply showing up.

Motor City debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2025 and will arrive in theaters across the U.S. on July 24, 2026.

The film also stars Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce, and Ben McKenzie.
