‘Dutton Ranch’ Episode 8 ending explained: Does Beulah die? Is Carter leaving? And who’s Joaquin’s dad?

No surprise here, but Dutton Ranch Season 1’s penultimate episode, “Whiskey Limits,” packed a serious punch.

Episode 7 of the hit Yellowstone spin-off ended with Beulah (Annette Bening) collapsing in pain shortly after announcing that Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) — not Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) — would inherit the 10-Petal Ranch. Emmett (Ed Harris) called a medevac to airlift her to the hospital, and Episode 8 revealed her fate. But that’s not all…

Dutton Ranch Episode 8 also showed the aftermath of Carter’s (Finn Little) drunken night, featured friction in both the Dutton and Jackson families, and wrapped with several jaw-dropping scenes that will keep fans on the edge of their seats until next week’s highly-anticipated Season 1 finale.

So how did Dutton Ranch Episode 8 end? What’s the deal with the 10-Petal’s illegal business? Is Carter leaving Dutton Ranch? And who did Joaquin call? Read on for answers!

Dutton Ranch Episode 8 spoilers ahead.

Dutton Ranch Episode 8 Ending Explained: What Happened To Beulah? Does Beulah Die On Dutton Ranch?

Bite your tongue! We can’t lose a main character as iconic as Beulah Jackson in Season 1, nor can we imagine Dutton Ranch without Annette Bening. And thankfully, we don’t have to!

At the top of Dutton Ranch Episode 8, “Whiskey Limits,” Beulah is airlifted out of her party and taken to the ER, where her family learns she had a heart attack. After the medical scare and an angioplasty (a procedure to open arteries) she lets her loved ones know she’s alive and well, but not without a request. She asks Kino to make peace with Rob-Will even though she left the ranch to him in a last-minute switch. She also warns Rob-Will that Beth and Rip are assets to the business. “You’re my sons, and you’re linked at the hip whether you like it or not. From cradle to grave,” Beulah explains. Joaquin seemingly agrees, but still feels majorly betrayed, and we learn he’s not ready to let Rob-Will take his future away from him.

Joaquin Turns On Rob-Will

In a shocking turn of events, after Beulah snubs him as successor, Joaquin abandons his loyalty to the Jacksons and heads to the police station to turn Rob-Will in. For what? The murder of Wes Ayers! Joaquin tosses the murder weapon onto Sheriff Wade’s (Josh Stewart) desk and orders him to issue a warrant for Rob-Will’s arrest. When Wade says, “Your family’s crazier than a sack of cats in a rainstorm,” Kino replies, “They’re no longer my family.”

Unfortunately Joaquin’s plan is a bust because he doesn’t know where Wes’ body is. (For those who need a refresher, Rip found it and tossed it in a makeshift construction site train station.) Wade gets distracted when his phone rings and tells Joaquin to “play your game of Clue elsewhere” because he “no longer give[s] a fuck” who he is. (Whether that’s true or he’s simply loyal to Beulah and scared to take down Rob-Will has yet to be determined.) The scene ends with Wade asking Joaquin to leave the gun and shut the door on his way out. So we’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of Kino’s quest.

Is Carter Leaving Dutton Ranch? Does Carter Die In Dutton Ranch?

That call Sheriff Wade was getting? It was Carter, who’s had a hell of a time since the two last talked at Beulah’s big bash. After waking up hungover and convincing Beth to let him drop out of school to pursue his dreams of cowboying, Carter accompanied Rip to the 10-Petal and got a ruuuuuude awakening. Cowboying is hard. Cowboying drunk is damn near impossible, and Carter learns it the hard way. After he takes a nasty spill off his horse and lashes out at Azul (J.R. Villarreal), Carter gets into it with Rip. Like, the kid clenches his fists and fantasizes about throwing a punch! HELP!

Rip sees through the act and recognizes Carter’s hurting. But he doesn’t know that on top of missing his parents he’s also mourning his pal Dwight (Ray McKinnon), struggling with the trauma from that night, and heartbroken over Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind). Rip attempts to give Carter an inspiring speech but he reminds him, “You’ll never be my father,” and add, “I got two people who think they’re saviors cause they took in an orphan.” When Rip says Carter’s not the only orphan in the family, Carter says he’s not the only asshole either and races inside to get his keys. Unaware why he’s so upset, Beth follows Carter out and begs him to let her in. “I grew up between Montana and Texas, no one noticed,” he cries. Devastated at the though of losing him, Beth tells Carter they were given to one another and vows to try harder to be there for him. Still, Carter says he has to go, but Beth reminds him, “This will always be your home.”

Rather than skip town, Carter drives to Dwights, cracks open a beer, and calls Sheriff Wade. Why? To ask Wade for a job, then threaten him with the reminder of Dwight’s murder when he declined to give him one. “Go home, son. There’s nothing for you around here,” Wade advised. And though Carter clearly doesn’t want to be with Beth and Rip right now, there’s no indication that he or Finn Little are leaving the series, nor can we imagine the show without him.

Austin Blows The Whistle On The 10-Petal’s Illegal Mexico Operation

Early on in the episode, a restless Austin who refuses to let Wes’ disappearance go, had a dangerous disagreement with Jackson security head Miguel (Berto Colón). After Miguel gives him reason to fear for his life, Austin reaches out to Zachariah and asks if he can trust him and Rip. “With your life,” Zach assures him.

So Austin sits around Beth and Rip’s table with Zach and tells them all why Wes went missing: he was looking into the 10-Petal’s Mexico operation that illegally steals and smuggles cattle. After the border was shut down because of screwworm (per the USDA, “larvae burrow into the flesh of a living animal [and] cause serious, often deadly damage”), the Jacksons still brought in big cattle loads and forged paperwork for Border Patrol and cattle brokers. “Whole Jackson family’s crooked, top to bottom. They ain’t ranchers, those motherfuckers are thieves putting every ranch in South Texas at risk,” Austin explained. His admission confirmed what we suspected all along: The Jacksons were behind Beth and Rip’s new bull, Bullet, with foot-and-mouth disease.

How aware and involved is Beulah? And what are Beth and Rip’s next steps? We’ll have to tune in to find out. But the next cattle load comes in two days!

Who Does Joaquin Call In Dutton Ranch Episode 8? Who Is Joaquin’s Father?

Before Season 1’s penultimate episode ends, Joaquin gets out of his car, screams about his Beulah/Rob-Will frustrations in Spanish, and makes a phone call. “Hola papa. Necesito tu ayuda,” he says, which means, “Hello dad, I need your help.”

So who’s Joaquin’s father? As noted in our Episode 7 recap, flashbacks introduced us to Joaqin’s dad Mariano, who was top 10-Petal hand when Beulah was younger. Looking for a full detailed breakdown? We’ve got you covered. Viewers have been craving more clarity around why Mariano left 10-Petal and what his involvement with Beulah, the business, and Joaquin is in present-day. And it sounds like we’ll find out — and potentially get a present-day Mariano appearance — in the Season 1 finale.

Stay tuned for more Dutton Ranch coverage from Decider.
