The 9 best tinted moisturizers we tested are ultra-wearable and makeup artist-approved
Victoria McDonnell, Camryn La Sala · 2026-05-28 · via New York Post

Tinted moisturizers are ideal for anyone who wants to achieve the perfect “no makeup” makeup look.

They’re usually lightweight, easy to blend in and give just enough coverage to make your skin glowy and protected without looking cakey.

“Tinted moisturizer is basically a sheer foundation. So if you like a lovely sheer wash over your skin and not a full coverage then [tinted moisturizer] is the product for you,” celebrity makeup Charlotte Hayward told the New York Post. “They are great for giving a light coverage so your skin tone looks more unified [and healthier] without looking like you’re wearing makeup — this [also] makes them quite foolproof to apply.”

We also spoke with the legendary Carmindy of What Not to Wear and her new brand Carmindy Beauty (a personal favorite, now on Amazon). She guided us through choosing the best-tinted moisturizer for your skin, what to look for in a tinted moisturizer, and which ones are her favorite, personally and professionally. Check out our comprehensive FAQs, informed by all these experts, below.

Best Overall: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Natural Matte Tinted Moisturizer

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Natural Matte Tinted Moisturizer
Victoria McDonnell

Pros:

  • Lightweight formula that feels breathable and comfortable all day
  • Natural matte finish helps control shine without looking dry
  • Buildable coverage with SPF 30 makes it easy for everyday wear

Cons:

  • Coverage may be too sheer for anyone wanting a full glam look
  • Matte finish might not feel hydrating enough for dry skin types
  • Those with color variation may have difficulty finding the right shade

I’ve tried a long list of tinted moisturizers over the years, but bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Natural Matte Tinted Moisturizer is the one I use the most.

The texture feels lightweight and breathable while still giving my skin enough coverage to blur redness, soften pores and even out my complexion. I love that it gives a natural matte finish without making my skin look flat or dry. It wears beautifully throughout the day and never feels greasy, even after hours of running around. The added mineral SPF 30 is another reason I keep it in my routine because it simplifies my makeup process without sacrificing sun protection.

This formula feels incredibly balanced on my skin, which is something I struggle to find with tinted moisturizers. A lot of matte complexion products cling to texture or look cakey after a few hours, but this one keeps my skin looking smooth and fresh. I love that this coverage is sheer to light but very buildable. I can keep it natural during the day or layer a little more when I want extra coverage. I also appreciate that it works well on sensitive and combination skin because it never irritates my face or causes breakouts.

For me, this is easily the best tinted moisturizer because it combines skincare, sun protection and makeup in one easy product that truly performs.

Size: 1.18 ounces | Shade range: 20 shades | Key features: Natural Matte Finish, Recommended SPF Amount, Sheer to Buildable Coverage

Best Budget: L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion

L'Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion
Victoria McDonnell

Pros:

  • Gives a natural, healthy-looking glow without heavy shimmer or glitter
  • Lightweight texture that blends easily with fingers and layers well with other products
  • Very versatile use as a tinted moisturizer, primer or subtle highlighter for the price

Cons:

  • Very light coverage, so it won’t replace foundation if you want evening or concealing
  • Glow can be too subtle for those who prefer a more intense highlight or dewy finish
  • May not last as long on oilier skin types without setting powder or touch-ups

I’ve tried plenty of drugstore glow products, but the L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion is the one I reach for when I want something lightweight that delivers a naturally radiant finish. It has that hybrid feel between a tinted moisturizer and a liquid illuminator, blending smoothly into skin with just fingers and leaving behind a soft, healthy-looking glow.

It feels comfortable on bare skin and layers well over sunscreen or under foundation — no pilling. I love how the finish is luminous, so it brightens the face without looking shimmery or overdone.

At this price point, it is one of the most useful budget complexion products I’ve used because it is so flexible. I can wear it alone for a quick even look, mix it with foundation to boost radiance or tap it onto the high points of my face for a subtle highlight effect. The coverage is light, but that is part of why it works so well as a tinted moisturizer-style product since it focuses more on glow and hydration than masking skin. It leaves skin looking fresher and more awake, especially on days when I want minimal effort but still want a put-together finish.

Size: 1.35 ounces | Shade range: 4 shades | Key features: Lightweight Glow Formula, Multi-Use Application

Best for Blurring Pores: Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint

Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint
Victoria McDonnell

Pros:

  • Feels very light on the skin with a comfortable, barely-there wear
  • Blurs pores and softens texture without looking heavy or cakey
  • Quick and simple to apply with fingers or a brush for everyday use

Cons:

  • Coverage may be too light if you prefer a full foundation finish
  • Shade match can take some trial and error, depending on undertone
  • May need setting powder for longer wear on oilier skin types

All hail Queen Rihanna and her makeup brand. I’ve tried a lot of base products, but the Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint has easily become the one I reach for most often when I want my skin to look even, smooth and still like skin. It gives that filtered finish that still feels real, especially when I’m not in the mood for heavier foundation.

The texture won me over immediately. It’s thin, silky and spreads with almost no effort, melting into the skin in a way that feels light-as-air from the first swipe. Once it sets, it feels like I’m not wearing anything at all. It blurs just enough to smooth out uneven areas while keeping everything breathable and comfortable throughout the day.

I can wear it on its own or build it slightly where I need more coverage, and it still keeps that natural skin-like finish. It’s the easiest way I’ve found to get a polished look without losing the look of real skin underneath.

Size: 1.08 ounces | Shade range: 25 shades | Key features: Lightweight. Blurring Effect, Easy to Apply

Best for Dry Skin: Ciele Tint & Protect Serum Foundation SPF 50+

Ciele Tint & Protect Serum Foundation SPF 50+
Victoria McDonnell

Pros:

  • Extremely lightweight texture that feels like skin and wears all day comfortably
  • Blends effortlessly and gives a natural, even finish without looking heavy or cakey
  • Works especially well for dry skin and helps keep the complexion smooth and hydrated

Cons:

  • Coverage may be too sheer for those who prefer a more full-coverage base
  • The serum consistency can feel a bit runny, making application less precise for some
  • Shade range may require extra effort to find a perfect match, depending on the undertone

I’ve been using the Ciele Tint & Protect Serum Foundation SPF 50+ and it has quickly become one of my latest obsessions. It gives that perfect skin-but-better finish without ever feeling like makeup is sitting on top of my face. The texture is incredibly lightweight and fluid, and it truly feels like your skin. Not just “light coverage” but that second-skin effect where you forget you’re even wearing anything at all.

It’s breathable, too, effortlessly melting into my skin and evening out my complexion. I love that it never feels heavy or mask-like, even when I build it up a bit. It layers beautifully without looking cakey, which makes it one of the easiest base products I’ve tested.

This has also been surprisingly excellent for dry skin. It doesn’t cling to dry patches or emphasize texture, but keeps everything looking smooth and hydrated. The serum-like feel gives a soft, healthy finish that lasts. For me, it’s the best tinted moisturizer-style base I’ve tried because it balances skincare comfort with real coverage and high SPF protection without ever feeling like too much.

Size: 1.28 ounces | Shade range: 14 shades | Key features: SPF 50+ Protection, Serum-Like, Hydrating

Best for Oily Skin: Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Hydrating Gel Skin Tint

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Hydrating Gel Skin Tint
Victoria McDonnell

Pros:

  • Long-lasting wear that holds up well through heat, humidity and travel days
  • Lightweight texture that blends easily and feels comfortable on skin
  • Natural finish that enhances skin without looking overly matte or overly dewy
  • Stays in place well once set, reducing the need for frequent touch-ups

Cons:

  • May feel slightly tacky during initial set time before it fully locks in
  • Coverage may be too light for those wanting full coverage base makeup
  • Can emphasize dry patches if skin is not well prepped with moisturizer

I didn’t expect a tinted moisturizer to hold up this well, but the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Hydrating Gel Skin Tint feels like it actually understands skin that needs hydration and lasting coverage at the same time. The texture goes on smooth and slightly bouncy, blending easily without feeling heavy or greasy. It evens out my skin in a natural way that still looks like skin, just more refreshed and balanced throughout the day. Once it sets, it has that subtle grip (trust me, it really grips!) that keeps everything in place without feeling tight or uncomfortable.

I just got back from a two-week vacation to Italy and this was the only base product I packed. Between walking around the Colosseum in Rome and spending long sun-filled days taking a ferry along Lake Como, it stayed put in heat and humidity without sliding off or breaking down. It kept my complexion looking even from morning through evening with minimal touch-ups and still felt comfortable on the skin. It’s the kind of product I’d pack again without hesitation because it handled travel days, long walks and constant movement better than most tinted moisturizers I’ve tried.

Size: 1 ounce | Shade range: 15 shades | Key features: Gel-Based, “Grip” Technology, Buildable

Best for Full Coverage: IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Foundation SPF 50+

IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Foundation SPF 50+
Sephora

Pros:

  • High SPF protection
  • Provides full coverage
  • Contains skincare ingredients

Cons:

  • May feel heavy on the skin
  • Higher price point

Since tinted moisturizers usually have sheer coverage, finding something that’s thicker can be a challenge. Nevertheless, the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream is a great option for those wanting more coverage but who don’t want the thickness of a full-on foundation. An added benefit is the wide shade range.

“Talk about AMAZING coverage,” Kendall Cornish, associate commerce editor, said. “I adore this tinted moisturizer for its lightweight feel but full-coverage delivery. I also like that I can rest assured that good ingredients are on my skin, working to heal imperfections and better my skin over time.”

Size: 1.08 ounces | Shade range: 30 shades | Key features: Multi-Purpose Formula, Natural Finish, Great SPF Protection

Best for Mature Skin: Iris & Romeo Best Skin Days Tinted Moisturizer

Iris & Romeo Best Skin Days Tinted Moisturizer
Iris & Romeo

Pros:

  • Specifically formulated for mature skin
  • Provides hydration and coverage
  • Contains skincare benefits

Cons:

  • Higher price point
  • Not ideal for oily skin types

The Best Skin Days has a five-in-one formula that includes serum, moisturizer, foundation, sunscreen and blue light pollution protector and the unique gel-like texture easily applies to the face with your fingers.

“Now I’m in my 30s, and while that’s still young, I’ve noticed changes in my skin that typical makeup won’t hide,” said Cornish. “Not that I want to hide, but I’d love for my dark spots, deeper wrinkles, and texture to be softened…and this tinted moisturizer delivers. It’s especially great for dry skin, which happens more when we age.”

Another tinted moisturizer for mature skin recommended by Carmindy: IT Cosmetics CC+ Nude Glow Lightweight Foundation + Glow Serum with SPF 40 ($39)

Size: 1.2 ounces | Shade range: 12 shades | Key features: Skincare-First Formula, Natural Finish, Hydrating

Best with SPF: EltaMD UV Daily Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40

EltaMD UV Daily Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40
Amazon

Pros:

  • Provides sheer coverage
  • Lightweight formula
  • Hydrating, thanks to hyaluronic acid in its ingredient list

Cons:

  • Limited shade range
  • Can feel slightly stick when first applied

If you’re looking for a bit more tinted coverage than your average facial sunscreen, a tinted moisturizer with SPF is the way to go.

Beauty YouTuber Carli Bybel and Ann highly recommend this EltaMD tinted moisturizer as an SPF pick.

“Elta MD SPF 40 is recommended by tons of different dermatologists because of the high SPF. It also brightens and enhances luminosity,” Ann told The Post.

“It has broad-spectrum SPF protection, dermatologist-recommended, and gives a beautiful, healthy ‘clean’ look to the skin,” said Bybel.

EltaMD UV Daily Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 not only protects your skin against damaging UV rays but also evens skin tone — creating a smooth, flawless-looking complexion. It infuses your skin with lightweight moisture for a healthy look and comfortable wear.

“EltaMD’s tinted sunscreen is one of my most-used beauty products,” Hannah Southwick, Page Six associate commerce editor, shared. “It’s just enough coverage for a light everyday look, and it feels great on the skin. I can see why so many celebrities swear by it!”

Size: 1.7 ounces | Shade range: 9 shades | Key features: Sun Protection, Natural Finish, Hydrating

Best Brightening: Saie Slip Tint SPF 35

Saie Slip Tint SPF 35
Amazon

Pros:

  • Lightweight texture that blends easily
  • Natural, dewy finish that gives an immediate brightening effect
  • Combines mineral SPF 35 with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid

Cons:

  • Sheer coverage may not be enough for significant discoloration or blemishes
  • Dewy finish can feel too glowy on very oily skin types without setting powder
  • Shade range may require careful matching since the tint is subtle and flexible rather than fully opaque

The Saie Slip Tint SPF 35 has become one of my go-to products because it feels light on my skin while still giving enough coverage to even things out. The texture is fluid and easy to spread, and it blends in quickly without clinging to dry spots. I like that it combines mineral SPF 35 with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid so my skin feels moisturized while I wear it.

When I apply it, my skin immediately looks more awake and even. The tint is sheer, but it softens redness and dullness in a way that still looks like my skin, just more refreshed. I notice a natural glow right after blending it in, and the finish stays dewy without turning greasy.

Size: 1.35 ounces | Shade range: 14 shades | Key features: Sun Protection, Natural Finish

How We Tested

For each tinted moisturizer, here’s the testing criteria we kept in mind:

  • Price: Regardless of budget, there’s no sense in splurging for a high-end tinted moisturizer if it won’t last for hours. Though a good tinted moisturizer is worth the investment, we kept the price in mind for each product tested. We were less forgiving of pricier options that bled, left skin cakey or caused breakouts.
  • Hourly check-ins: Every hour on the hour (as best as we could), we looked in the mirror and checked our faces to ensure there were no signs of the tinted moisturizer transferring off our skin or looking cakey.
  • Ease of application: If the makeup brand has a matching brush, we tried to test it out with the product, too.
  • Shade selection: We identified how well brands took undertones and shade range into account.
  • Consistency: We tested each tinted moisturizer without concealer, translucent loose powder, bronzer or blush. This ensures there wasn’t an outside variable impacting how each tinted moisturizer looked.
  • Noteworthy features: From iconic packaging to its creaminess and smooth feel, we jotted down anything that stood out.

FAQs on Tinted Moisturizers

What makes a great tinted moisturizer?

“The ideal tinted moisturizer would protect the skin from UV rays, leave a feeling of dewiness not tightness on the face, and the complexion would look slightly more even,” Carmindy said. “It would not ball up or ‘pill’ on the skin throughout the day. The majority of tinted moisturizers contain SPF but when sun protection, hydration and color pigments are combined you will most likely be sacrificing one or more actions.”

When a product promises too much, like a skin-like finish, SPF, high coverage, and hydration, it’s often too good to be true. “SPF can sometimes make the finish look a bit chalky or the sun-blocking effectiveness can get diluted, the moisturizing factor might not be as hydrating as you’d like, or the color might look uneven or not give enough coverage,” Carmindy told The Post. “So, the key is in knowing what you truly want ie more coverage, more UV protection, etc., and how you want it to look and feel on your skin (as there are even matte options for super oily skin).”

What skin types is tinted moisturizer best for?

While the limit may not exist, Carmindy helped us narrow it down to “people who only want a ‘barely there’ light tint to their skin and don’t want to spend a lot of time getting ready each day. Some people don’t like the feeling of wearing a heavy foundation yet still want a little help looking fresh, so a tinted moisturizer is a great solution for them,” she said.

Can tinted moisturizer be medium or full-coverage?

While some tinted moisturizers will claim “full coverage,” they may not be the real deal — simply foundations with hydrating properties. There’s nothing wrong with that, but Carmindy said that if you’re looking for something easy to apply with higher coverage try a CC cream instead.

What tinted moisturizers are the best?

Carmindy has one pro tip that she touts as “the best way” and we may even agree when it comes to achieving your perfect tinted moisturizer-like finish. “Create your own! I always create my own tinted moisturizer by applying sunscreen first (guaranteed protection that’s not diluted), then my Carmindy Beauty Lit From Within Daily Prep Primer (super hydrating) mixed with a little liquid foundation in the palm of my hand to create the perfect tinted moisturizer…you get to control the coverage. Some areas like around the eyes can be applied as a sheer tinted moisturizer (1-1 ratio), whereas areas that need more coverage, like around the nose or on the cheeks can go medium to full coverage (more foundation and less primer).”

Of course, she also recognizes this may not be the most ideal process for a true tinted moisturizer-lover — someone who prefers to spend very little time on makeup prep.
