After sprinkling little Shaw Family Secret crumbs throughout Tracker‘s third season, the final two episodes finally gave Colter (Justin Hartley), Russell (Jensen Ackles), and viewers answers to long-held burning questions.
Tracker Season 3’s penultimate episode saw the brothers track down their dad’s former colleague, Dr. Serena Jukic (Jeri Ryan), and receive troubling intel. The top-secret Chrono Stasis program that Jukic and their dad were working on is still active, and kids like Danny Kellerman (Reid Miller) and Lola (Laurel Marsden) are being held captive as government test subjects.
We left off on one heck of a cliffhanger, with Colter and Russell breaking into the testing facility to rescue Danny. After Colter tried to get him to safety, however, Danny pressed his panic button and sounded the facility’s alarm. Tracker flashed a “To Be Continued” promise, and left fans to wonder if the brothers would successfully save Danny and Lola, or if McIntyre (Glenn Morshower), his hitman Vickers (Chido Nwokocha), and Russell’s compromised inside man Felton (David Costabile) would emerge victorious.
Written by Elwood Reid & Travis Donnelly and directed by Ken Olin, Tracker Season 3, Episode 22, “The Best Ones,” is an an eventful, action-packed hour of Shaw-filled suspense that ends with some much-needed closure. In true Tracker fashion, we also get some more twists! Looking for a Tracker Season 3 finale recap? Decider’s Tracker Season 3 ending explained article has you covered. Just be warned, major finale spoilers lie ahead.
Before we check in with the Shaw brothers, Tracker‘s Season 3 finale opens on Lola who’s strapped down to a chair being tortured into submission. Though she promised she could “be better,” the doctor told her, “We can use this as a learning experience. Danny was the same when he was younger, but he learned.” Before he drugged her, she used her abilities to see the future and warned, “They’re coming for you. Two men.” And she was right!
Though Russell was detained by a guard at the end of last week’s episode, he managed to escape and find Colter and Danny as the panic alarm sounded. Turns out, Danny did want to get the hell out of that testing site, but he refused to leave without Lola. Colter and Russell assured him they’d go back to rescue her, so they took down every guard that got in their way, got Danny out safely, and took him to Dr. Jukic and her partner Paul (Jerry Trimble), who were hiding out at his brother’s dry cleaning office.
Dr. Jukic assured Danny that she tried looking for him before they pushed her out, and she had no idea what they did to his parents. Danny said he’d forgiven her a long time ago, and the two jumped right into a session in hopes of conjuring the imagery needed to point them to “The Quiet Place,” the remote offside location test subjects like Lola were hauled off to when they were resistant. While the two were in session, Russell laid out next steps for his brother: “If we’re gonna shut this thing down and have a chance, we have to un-alive the head of the snake. First, we gotta find the snake.”
When Dr. Jukic and Danny returned from their session, Danny shared some vague but helpful images: a power plant, a cell tower, a bridge, and a blue water tower near a two-lane highway. It might not seem like much, but naturally, when Randy (Chris Lee) did his research he found a matching location with Dorix Logistics on the lease, 100 miles North of the brothers. Colter headed there alone, while Russell went back to meet his source Felton in hopes of getting intel on “the head of the snake,” unaware that Felton was already working for him! Though Felton lured Russell to danger again, he did his old pal a solid by warning him about Vickers and revealing the two of them got made. Armed men emerged from the shadows to ambush the men, and though Russell took them out and stole one of their phones, they killed Felton and shot Russell in the chest.
Back at the testing facility, Vickers searched Danny’s room for evidence. As he took in the child’s belongings and a hidden note from Lola that read, “Thank you Danny. I wouldn’t make it through this without you,” it seemed as though he might be having second thoughts about hunting a literal down to imprison him again. After telling the guard that Colter and Russell would obviously be going after Lola, however, Vickers fatally stabbed him and reminded us just how ruthless he is! Vickers headed to The Quiet Place to get Lola, as did Colter. And after taking out more armed guards (Colter’s body count knows no bounds!), Tracker‘s leading man found Vickers and Danny and took Vickers out, or so he thought… While he successfully escaped with Lola, she used her abilities to sense what was coming and confirmed, “You didn’t kill him.” After Colter called Russell and learned he’ was’d been shot, Lola warned, “He needs you,” so the two headed to Russell’s rescue.
Before Colter arrived, Russell called Reenie (Fiona Rene) and asked her to secretly track the incoming calls from the phone he stole off of one of McIntyre’s men. He stressed that he didn’t want Colter to find out, because, “the less people know the better.” The good news? Colter and Lola arrived in time to patch Russell up. The bad news? McIntyre traced their location and sent Vickers and team to finish them off. While Colter almost single-handedly took out the men, Vickers found Russell and held a gun to his head demanding info on Lola. Russell assured him he’d rather die than give up his brother’s location, and just when it seemed like Russell was about to meet his maker, Colter snuck up from behind and shot Vickers first.
While Colter called in a favor from Barbie (Freda Foh Shen) and had her give Danny, Lola, Dr. Jukic, and Paul new identities so they could restart their lives, Russell went to find “the head of the snake” alone. He walked in on McIntyre and had a candid conversation about how their situation could unfold. Whether he killed McIntyre or let him live, Russell knew he’d been looking over his shoulder the rest of his life. So McIntyre made him an offer. He handed Russell a file on his father, and after opening it, an unsettled Russell said, ” This is BS.” McIntyre replied, “You know it isn’t. What’s in that file, what he did to Colter, it’s all true. And I’m guessing you wouldn’t want him to see this, and he doesn’t have to…”
Tracker doesn’t let viewers know what exactly is in the file, though based on Russell’s “Starting to wonder if Dad ever used us for any of his experiments” comment in the penultimate episode, there’s a chance that Ashton did use Colter for testing of sorts. Perhaps we’ll learn the truth in Season 4, or the mystery will remain forever. All we know now is that the intel in that file was bad enough for Russell to make a deal with the devil. He reluctantly agreed to fix a problem for McIntyre, and in return, he was promised freedom and the file. Before Russell headed off on his secret assignment, he called Reenie and begged her to cover for him when Colter inevitably started questioning his whereabouts. She agreed, and he left without saying goodbye to his brother, all to protect him. (Will the Jensen Ackles spin-off ever happen?)
Before Tracker Season 3 wrapped, Colter unlocked a gate and drove his Airstream up to a home base of sorts. He walked into a furnished garage, grabs a beer out of the fridge, and watched his pal Keaton (Brent Sexton) roll up hauling Ashton’s old truck from Echo Ridge. Colter told Keaton that the off-grid location was “a long story,” but called it “home, sort of.” Keaton agreed to help Colter fix up his dad’s old truck, and though Colter said he didn’t get all the answers he wanted, he learned his dad “was a good man in the end.” Keaton reminded Colter that “Nobody’s perfect.”Colter replied, “Not even close,” because his dad was flawed as hell! (Aside from the mysterious file, don’t forget Colter’s mom touched on Ashton’s anger issues last week!) After noting how bad his dad was at fixing cars, Tracker Season 3 closed with Colter sitting in the truck and saying, “I’ll get you up and running again.” Is it an anti-climactic finish compared to Season 2? Sure. But Colter is working hard to bury the questions about Ashton that took up so much space in his brain for so many years. Fixing the car is a small step, but he’s setting out to break a cycle and trying to be better than his dad.
For those who don’t know, Tracker will be relocating to Los Angeles film Season 4, so we can’t wait to see what sunny West Coast adventures await Colter and team. Stay tuned for more updates!
