The Yankees will have Gerrit Cole on the mound for his fifth start of the season when they return to The Bronx to begin a three-game series Tuesday against the White Sox, who will counter with Davis Martin.
This should be a fun pitching duel.
Cole has a 2.45 ERA through four starts, and Martin has a 2.41 ERA through 13 starts for Chicago and is tied for the MLB lead in wins at 9-2.
Cole is showing flashes that he’s getting back to himself.
He’s averaging 96.8 mph on his four-seam fastball and has increased his workload each time on the mound.
The Bombers have been in a nice groove with a 7-4 record in June.
All of that success has come with Aaron Judge injured, as they’ve seen their role players step up across the board.
Paul Goldschmidt has a .378 average with 12 RBIs in this span.
Jazz Chisholm has made up for poor hitting (.171 average and a team-high 14 strikeouts) by drawing walks and stealing bags once he gets on base.
It also helps that he’s hit three home runs over this span, which is tied for the team lead.
More impressively, the Yankees are getting timely hits late in games.
Four of their wins since June 1 have featured go-ahead runs in the eighth inning or later.
I love the rhythm this Yankees team is playing with right now and with Cole on the mound, and I expect them to keep the good vibes rolling.
I’ll bet them to win straight up in their first game back at home in a week.
