Scottish mother found guilty of killing newborn after bla...

A mother who tried to blame another child for the death of her 19-day-old daughter has been convicted of murder.

Nicole Blain, 30, was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow during a trial over the death of her newborn daughter, Thea Wilson.

The young baby died in July 2023 after suffering “catastrophic” injuries at Blain’s flat in Scotland.

The court heard that the infant sustained three skull fractures, brain damage, broken ribs, and bleeding behind the eyes.

During the trial, Blain claimed she didn’t know what happened because she had taken a nap with Thea asleep in her crib and was woken up by a neighbor at the door, before finding the baby on the floor.

Blain went on to say she believed it must have been a “tragic accident” caused by another child also staying with her.

However, prosecutors dismissed the claims as “nonsense” while presenting medical evidence to the jury.

Pathologist Leighanne Deboys told the court that Thea’s injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma and being violently shaken.

The medical expert added that the trauma was akin to injuries typically seen in a high-speed car crash, making it highly unlikely to have been caused by another child.

The jury also heard that Blain had reportedly been struggling with post-natal depression and was visited by a social worker on the morning of the incident.

Later that afternoon, the baby’s grandfather, Alan Wilson, received a phone call from Blain.

Mr Wilson testified that he heard “piercing and extremely loud” screaming in the background.

“I thought it was an older child doing it, but then I realised it was the baby who was screaming,” Mr Wilson told the court.

“She (Blain) did mumble ‘I do not know what to do’, she did not sound right, (and) I said ‘hang up and phone an ambulance’.”

Blain had also allegedly spoken on the phone to a support worker, telling her that she believed another child had taken Thea out of the crib and dropped her.

It’s then believed that a support worker arrived at the flat and found the newborn cold, not making any sounds, and appearing to be an “awful color,” prompting her to immediately dial emergency services.

Thea was transported to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Meanwhile, horror footage of a gender reveal posted on TikTok has re-emerged, showing Blain clutching a knife as another female holds a black balloon.

Blain can be seen getting increasingly angry before charging towards the balloon with the knife, sending pink confetti into the air to confirm she was having a girl.

She’s then seen storming off while sticking her middle finger up at the camera.

Giving evidence at her trial, Blain maintained that she would “never in a million years” harm her daughter.

“The only thing to blame was me being asleep, and that is something I will have to live with for the rest of my life,” Blain told the court.

After hearing all the evidence, the jury found her guilty of murder.

The judge, Lord Scott, described it as a “thankfully unusual case” and confirmed Blain would be jailed for life.

“I will be passing a life sentence, (but) I do want more information about you before deciding the length of the punishment part,” Lord Scott said in court.

“In the meantime, you will be remanded in custody.”

Blain reportedly sobbed hysterically as she was handcuffed and shouted, “Tell my dad I love him” before being led to the cells.

Police Scotland Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young said Blain will now face the consequences of her actions.

“This is a tragic case in which a baby has lost her life,” the detective said in an online statement.

Blain is due to be sentenced next month.
