The Nemesis Netflix series premiered this week with eight action-packed episodes following a compelling cat-and-mouse chase between LAPD Officer Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law) and accomplished criminal Coltrane Wilder (Y’lan Noel).
Created by Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole, the thrilling new Netflix series follows Detective Stiles’ investigation into a criminal gang pulling off multimillion dollar heists across Los Angeles. Isaiah becomes obsessed with proving that Coltrane, a respected local businessman, is the ringleader of the crew and also the person who killed his former partner years before. The investigation drives both men to the brink as they put everything on the line to take care of the people they love the most, while putting all their might into taking their nemesis down once and for all.
This was a blockbuster season of television, made possible by the cast of Nemesis. Law and Noel both strongly command the screen, making every second of this exciting new series feel propulsive. The stars are joined by Cleopatra Coleman, Gabrielle Dennis, Tre Hale, Moe Irvin and more.
As Marole told DECIDER during our recent chat with the series co-creators, “Every character drives the story forward and there are no episodes off. Every episode moves forward. This is not a second viewing situation. This is first screen viewing. Put your phone down. Eyes up. Enjoy.”
**Spoilers for Nemesis Season 1 ahead!**
Nemesis Season 1 showed Coltrane sidestepping every one of Isaiah’s attempts at catching him and his team. But things come to a head in Episode 6 when Coltrane’s crew, joined by Isaiah’s father Amos “Nightmare” Stiles, get involved in a shootout with the police, resulting in several casualties and injuries on both sides. Amos attempts to take off and go into hiding with the money he earned from the job he did with Coltrane’s crew, but Coltrane kills him in cold blood in Isaiah’s guest house without realizing Noah was hiding in the closet and witnessed the whole thing. Episode 7 ends with Isaiah being suspended from the force and put on house arrest as they investigate who killed Amos.
Coltrane framing Isaiah for his father’s murder certainly throws a wrench in his investigation, allowing him the window he needs to finally run away with Ebony. But there’s still one episode left in the season. Does Isaiah catch Coltrane? What happens at the end of Nemesis? Keep reading to see how Nemesis on Netflix ends.
At the precinct, Ebony is being booked by Detective Cruz, who urges her to give up Noah and her husband’s locations. But Ebony refuses and instead demands her phone call, which she uses to get in touch with Coltrane via Eden’s Bliss Spa.
Meanwhile, at Isaiah’s house, Cerullo is giving Isaiah and Candace an update on the case as they try to figure out whether Noah was kidnapped. Isaiah speculates Noah likely ran away and left his phone because he wants to find Coltrane and avenge Amos’ death. The law is on their side now; there’s an APB out on Coltrane after Detective Harper was spotted on camera handing Coltrane Isaiah’s service weapon in the strip club before the weapon was used to kill Amos, allowing Coltrane to frame Isaiah for his father’s murder.
Coltrane is waiting for Ebony at Wilder Holdings when he receives a call from the mysterious Eden’s Bliss Spa. They speak in code as the dispatcher explains Ebony is down at the precinct and will not be making their rendezvous. Coltrane scraps their escape plans as he angrily calls their lawyer and instructs him to do everything he can to protect Ebony.
Noah turns up at Amos’ house where he finds a gun and runs into one of his grandfather’s goons, who explains they’re holding a vigil for Amos and wanted to grab a few of his things “to honor him.” Noah explains he wants to get back at the man who killed him.
Cruz appeals to Ebony one more time and makes it clear she will be sent to prison and will not be able to raise her child if Noah turns up dead, which clearly strikes a nerve. Ebony’s lawyer arrives and advises Ebony to tell the police who is going after Noah. Ebony is scared to say it’s her sister, Charlie, who ordered the kill on Isaiah’s son.
Later, when Noah leaves Amos’ house, Harper is waiting outside and is ready to take the shot until she realizes he’s not alone. Back at the house, Isaiah has enough of waiting around for an update on Noah. He uses a plastic bag and vaseline to slip the house arrest bracelet off his ankle so he can sneak out and look for his son. And Candace is up to her own sneaky business – she broke into Ebony’s house to try and find a satellite phone. Instead, she finds a photo proving Ebony knows ‘Brenda Johnson,’ which is the alias Charlie used when she approached Candace earlier in the season.
At the precinct, Ebony refuses to rat out her sister or her husband. Malik and Cruz show her the footage of Harper handing Coltrane the weapon in the strip club, noting it implicates him in the murders of Andrei Malakian and the police officers killed in the Century City shootout, which could land him the death penalty. Malik jokes Ebony could “get the needle, too.”
Sam appeals to her one more time to share what she can about Noah’s whereabouts. Malik returns with a phone and demand she give them either Noah or Coltrane so she can walk free. She speaks to Eden’s Bliss Spa and gets patched through to the manager, her sister Charlie. She convinces Charlie to let Noah get home safe to his parents, but Charlie is clearly disappointed Ebony is willing to compromise her own sister in order to save herself and Coltrane. Charlie promises Noah is safe and tells Ebony not to call her again.
Noah is partying at Amos’ vigil and roesn’t realize he’s being tailed by Harper. Just as she is is closing in on him, Isaiah arrives and drags him out of the party. Noah is convinced he has to take care of Coltrane himself because he doesn’t trust the police to take care of it. Isaiah can see just how badly Amos’ death impacted Noah and promises to take care of Coltrane himself. Meanwhile, Charlie tells Harper she has a new target.
When he brings Noah back home, he tells his son he needs to get back on the road to hunt Coltrane down. But he will also have to put the ankle brace on him to make sure he can track him in case anything goes wrong. Isaiah makes the mistake of reaching out to Alvarez and asking for his help finding Coltrane, which puts him in debt to the cartel.
Cruz and Malik get word that Noah is safe with Isaiah, which means Ebony is free to go home. Her lawyer informs her the LAPD is letting her walk free to use her as bait in hopes of luring Coltrane out. He suggests she stay at a friend’s house before leaving the country. “If you’re smart, 24 hours from now, this part of your life will be over,” he tells her.
Back at Ebony’s house, Candace finally finds her satellite phone just as Ebony arrives back home. Candace confronts her about the photo of her and Charlie. When Ebony refuses to answer her questions, Candace refuses to give her the satellite phone so she can reach Coltrane. The ladies begin to fight when Alvarez’s men suddenly break through the door, aiming to kidnap Ebony to lure Coltrane out.
Coltrane goes to the the rendezvous to wait for Ebony. He checks the security cameras and sees Ebony’s arrived home – but so have two suspicious cars full of Alvarez’s men. He turns to rush home when he’s suddenly shot by Harper. Coltrane kills Harper after a physical confrontation. His phone rings and he’s expecting it to be Ebony, but its Alvarez’s men telling him they’re keeping her hostage.
Isaiah gets reinstated to the LAPD. Jimmy and Isaiah share a touching moment in which reveals he put his pension at risk by vouching for Isaiah, but he feels like he needs to step up as a father figure for him now that Amos is dead. Now that he has his badge back, Isaiah attempts to call off the hit on Coltrane since he has legal means to hunt him down, but Ernesto tells him it’s too late.
Coltrane moves fast. He gunned down Alvarez’s people in a warehouse where a woman is being held hostage. One of Alvarez’s people tells Coltrane it was a black cop who ordered the job. Coltrane unmasks the woman, expecting it to be Ebony, but it’s Candace who says they mistaked her for his wife. She struggles to come to terms with the truth that Isaiah hired the Alvarez cartel to use Ebony to lure Coltrane out. He tells Candace Ebony “made a huge sacrifice” to save Noah’s life and asks for her help in finding Ebony. Candace calls Cruz for an update with Coltrane listening on. Cruz is at the hospital with Ebony. She was injured in the fall but she is under sedation at the hospital.
Coltrane plans to go to the hospital to save her and calls Charlie for help.
Cruz tells Isaiah Ebony’s fingerprints were found in the stockroom in the distro during the Manny Shaw killing, which ties her and Coltrane to the death of Isaiah’s late trainee.
With nowhere to go after being held hostage, Candace turns up at Malik’s house and tells him what happened with the Alvarez cartel and Coltrane. He sends a squad car to the warehouse she was being held at. She is really shaken up and admits she doesn’t know who her husband is anymore, and wonders whether she made a mistake choosing Isaiah over him. Malik comforts Candace and the two begin to hook up.
The hospital is crawling with undercover cops waiting for Coltrane to turn up. But they’re not prepared for when he actually does sneak in. He lures the cops out by making it clear on the security cameras that he is in the building. With Isaiah and the cops focused on chasing Coltrane out of the hospital, a team of women dressed as nurses sneak into Ebony’s room to get her out. Coltrane manages to lose the police as the nurses sneak Ebony into an ambulance where Charlie is waiting for her and tells her she has a doctor waiting on a private jet for her.
Isaiah spots Coltrane leaving the hospital in his car and sparks a car chase through Los Angeles. But the Alvarez cartel, the LAPD, and Noah converge on Coltrane’s car at the same time, resulting in a massive shootout. Isaiah arrives and tracks him down by foot. But Noah corners Coltrane down an alleyway and holds him at gunpoint.
Coltrane tries to convince Noah not to shoot him. One of Alvarez’s men shoots Noah just as Isaiah finds them in the alleyway. Coltrane applies pressure to the gunshot wound on Noah’s leg while pointing a gun at Isaiah. Coltrane and Isaiah are in a standoff. While holding each other at gunpoint, Coltrane convinces Isaiah to let him walk free and be with his wife so Isaiah can save Noah. Isaiah drops his gun and lets Coltrane walk free while he calls for help.
“You were never gonna win,” Coltrane tells Isaiah before taking off on foot.
