An off-duty senior NYPD officer allegedly fired an accidental, stray shot during an altercation with his daughter’s friend in Rockland County on Sunday, according to law enforcement sources.

Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley, who oversees the Bronx North command, was involved in a physical altercation with a man accused of harassing his daughter in Haverstraw, New York, late Sunday night, sources told The Post.

The man is purportedly a school friend of Gurley’s daughter, according to the sources.

During the heated confrontation, the police chief allegedly fired an accidental shot.

No one was struck, but Gurley injured his arm during the fight and will wear a sling while he heals, the sources said.

The Haverstraw Police Department responded to the shooting and is leading the investigation. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division and Internal Affairs Bureau are separately probing the incident.

Sources told The Post that Gurley was placed on modified duty and reassigned after the shooting.

Gurley joined the NYPD in 2000. He was promoted to deputy chief during his career and eventually to assistant chief in 2023, according to his LinkedIn.

In February, the senior cop told The Post that getting promoted within the department was not an easy task.

“If you were to put in hard work and see people pass you…you would kind of get discouraged and may not want to work as hard,” he said. “That has leveled off a lot over the past couple of years.”

The father of three is a first-generation cop born and raised in the Bronx.

He has since been placed on modified duty.

Haverstraw is just 30 miles north of the Bronx.
