Two of the biggest being Justin Bieber and the tiny portable fan that his fashion brand collaborated with. Shark’s new mini three-in-one cooling system was spotted with plenty of festivalgoers and influencers this year — even Alix Earle threw it in her bag. Shark has positioned it as the ultimate festival-season essential, built to handle sweat, dust, crowds and the very real human desire to not overcomplicate staying cool.
The ChillPill combines a high-speed bladeless fan, dry-touch mist, and a cryo-inspired cooling plate that the brand claims can lower skin temperature by up to 16 degrees. It can be worn, clipped on or set into tabletop mode, and offers up to 11 hours of battery life — so it lasts as long as you do.
Surrounding Bieber’s long-awaited Coachella set, the brand dropped a limited-edition collab with the pop star’s SKYLRK label. The bright orange “Heat” colorway is still available on Shark’s site, though other shades are already close to selling out, with select options also on Amazon for $150. It’s already ranked as a best-selling new release on the retail site.
As both a concert-and-workout-junkie, I know a thing or two about a good portable fan (and the importance of not overheating when you’re low on electrolytes), so I wanted to see if the ChillPill actually lives up to the hype. It’s not cheap, but it’s essentially marketed as replacing three devices in one.
Naturally, I decided to test it out after a jog around Brooklyn, and I’ve got some thoughts.
The ChillPill deserves credit where it’s due. This little device is truly a powerhouse.
The touch-control screen is intuitive and simple to use, and it comes with two interchangeable attachments that pop in and out easily depending on what kind of cool you need. It’s also light and compact enough that I was able to throw it in my fanny pack during a run, and it didn’t hold me back at all.
The fan offers 10 speeds and noise levels, so you can go from a quiet breeze to stronger airflow for active use. Even on the lowest setting, it puts out a solid amount of air. Once I worked up a real sweat, I needed a higher speed to cool down. Another standout feature is the range; it disperses air effectively, so it works just as well from a distance (I’ve also clipped it onto my daughter’s stroller, which works like a breeze).
The mist is very refreshing, delivering an evaporative cool without soaking your skin or clothes. As someone who hates anything on my face, this mist didn’t bother me at all. You can switch between constant and interval modes, with the interval option allowing you to enjoy extended use and fewer refills.
For me, the only real downside is the fact that it requires charging. It’s just one more thing to remember before a festival day or long run — but given everything it can do, it still feels worth it.
