‘I Will Find You’ stars Sam Worthington and Britt Lower on going to great lengths as parents and Season 2 hopes

Is there anything a parent wouldn’t do for their child?

**Spoiler warning: This article contains spoilers for the entire first season of I Will Find You on Netflix**

That’s the question at the heart of Sam Worthington and Britt Lower‘s new Netflix series, I Will Find You, and it’s something the pair of actors know all too well. The show, which follows David Buroughs (Worthington), a father who was convicted of killing his son more than half a decade ago, sets out alongside his sister-in-law (Lower) to discover the truth about what really happened to his child.

In the show — which is based on the bestselling Harlan Coben novel of the same name — David’s hopes for exonerating himself are set anew and multiplied as he not only discovers that there way be a way to prove his innocence, but also that his son may still be alive. For Worthington and Lower, it was the central theme that played on many different levels, especially as parents themselves.

“All of us in this series have young kids, actually,” Lower told DECIDER in a recent interview. “Erin Richards, Milo [Ventimiglia], Sam, and myself, we kind of bonded over it. When you have young people in your lives, you would just do anything for them.”

Lower is a stepmom to two children she shares with her husband, Kenna Kennor; meanwhile, Worthington has three sons with his wife, Lara Worthington. And they’re not just talking the talk, either. In 2025, Lower went viral for a Golden Globes interview where she said she was committed to getting Ariana Grande’s autograph for her stepdaughter, no matter the cost. Can you blame her?

“At the core of this story is, ‘What you will do for your family and especially for a young person,'” Lower told DECIDER, adding that she did eventually accomplish her goal to impress her own child with Grande’s signature. Clearly, she can relate to the idea of going above and beyond for someone you love, just like David and her own character do in I Will Find You. “Matthew is their total drive this whole series.”

As for whether or not they would ever be up for revisiting these characters in a potential Season 2, keep reading to see what they told DECIDER about bringing David and Rachel back to life down the line…

DECIDER: I want to start by asking: you both have a history of playing two versions of the same character [in Avatar and Severance]. Is that something you thought about and bonded over?

BRITT LOWER: I hadn’t thought about that. We bonded over being birthday twins. First of all, we both have the same birthday, August 2nd. And yeah, I hadn’t thought about the dual nature of both of our roles. That’s cool. Now that you’ve said it, we’re going to have to think about it some more.

Given your experience with those dual-natured characters, do you find that it’s easier to step into a role like this or do you find it more challenging overall?

SAM WORTHINGTON: I think you do it more than me [in Severance].

LOWER: Yeah, maybe. I think what I’ve learned from working on Severance is that every person, every character, has multiple sides of themselves, and especially in a complex series like this, there’s always going to be dueling tensions within the character. So to find that light in that darkness, the strong and the soft muscle as you were talking about is always helpful. We do have different ways that we show up in different environments and different shapes that we take on, even if you are just one person.

What was your favorite part about these characters to explore? Was it the soft or the strong? What parts really spoke to you as an actor?

WORTHINGTON: I if you look at Harlan’s books and his previous series, he’s created a certain genre. He’s got these pulpy, melodramatic tales that there are always twists, turns, red herrings, cliffhangers. He really leans into that. And I think our job is to try and find the authenticity within that. That’s always the most exciting for me, and hoping that the genre doesn’t kind of wash you away and pull you into it, because that’s that’s the trap, because the emotions are so heightened. So the most challenging part was just trying to keep building a relationship that felt authentic and natural in its performance amongst all the kind of craziness and suspense that is exciting to watch, too.

LOWER: And we’re working with source material of a book so the most exciting part is sometimes things that you weren’t reading on the page are coming to life while we’re filming, and the other actor will do something that inspires you that you could never have dreamt of while you were reading it. It’s actually embodying the characters and being on the run with them, where you learn so much on the fly.

WORTHINGTON: And we were lucky because Harlan, he creates these characters and he’s dreamt these characters, and then he’s brave enough to hand them over to Britt and myself to allow us to journey with them, too. So we’re kind of all creating it together — that’s very rare that writers do that. They want what’s written on the page done a certain way that they have in their head. Whereas Harlan allows his books to become something more.

I feel like that shows. I love the message of a show like this, too, about parents doing anything and everything for their kids. Britt, as I was doing my research, I came across a video of you at the Golden Globes last year saying that you were going on a mission to get Ariana Grande’s autograph for your nine-year-old stepdaughter. Gotta ask if you ever accomplished that goal?

LOWER: I did it, I got it, I went during a commercial break and I made a beeline towards her, and she was so generous and even kindly asked me for my autograph, which my stepdaughter was very proud of me for. But yeah, all of us in this series have young kids, actually. Erin Richards, Milo, Sam and myself kind of bonded over it. When you have young people in your lives, you would just do anything for them. At the core of this story is, “What you will do for your family and especially for a young person.” Matthew is their total drive this whole series.

Sam, I know you have some kids yourself, do you have any stories like that that you relate to?

WORTHINGTON: I saw Karl-Anthony Towns this morning, and then my knees buckled and I got very startled. I get too nervous to ask for stuff like that. I don’t think they’ll believe I actually met him.

I think they’ll still love you. I have to pivot and ask about bringing in Milo Ventimiglia as the show’s villain. Would you guys care to apologize to the millions of fans who are never going to see one of their favorite actors bashing in someone’s brains?

LOWER: I think we’ll all need therapy at the end of this. Yeah, what a surprise. I mean, Milo is just the most lovely, generous, like, beautiful person and so it’s very good casting to put him in this role.

And talk to me about reading those final two episodes and seeing how things shook out.

WORTHINGTON: It’s very complex. It’s one of those ones where it’s quite complicated really, to unpack. But I think those twists and turns is what makes Harlan’s work. The fact that they are complicated, that they do misdirect you in a completely different way. I think that’s the exciting part. What they’ve done with Milo and that character is very interesting. I think it was more of a shock to Milo than anybody else, to be honest.

I’ll wrap here. We all saw that handhold in the finale. What’s going on there and do you think you guys would ever be interested in revisiting these characters in a second season?

LOWER: We were saying earlier, we hope this family has nothing more dramatic that they have to experience. They’ve already been through the ringer.

WORTHINGTON: Could be a boring second season.

LOWER: I think both Sam and I really loved how quiet that ending is and how open-ended I think it is. I felt it was really earned. These two characters have been through so much together, and the whole family has just really stood by each other through the darkest chapter.

WORTHINGTON: Sometimes it’s okay to end something like this with simple gestures like that, or the tapping of the foot between the father and the son. They’re much more powerful in the end.
