In this week’s new movies on VOD, you can catch Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas in the musical comedy Power Ballad, or go for something a little more dark and gritty with the thriller Carolina Caroline, starring Samara Weaving as a desperate woman who turns to crime as a way out of her current life.
Also out this week is Tuner, a crime caper starring Leo Woodall as a man with a heightened sense of hearing who makes a living as a piano tuner, but turns to burglary when he realizes his sensitivity to sound means he’s especially good at cracking safes. Dustin Hoffman, Tovah Feldshuh and Havana Rose Liu also star. Another great title that arrives this week is I Love Boosters, the crime comedy from Boots Riley about a gang of shoplifters (played by the impressive trio of Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie and Taylour Paige) who routinely steal from a ruthless designer (Demi Moore). It’s a capitalist critique with a surreal twist.

Power Ballad
Directed by John Carney (known for films like Once and Sing Street), who also co-wrote the script with Peter McDonald, Power Ballad tells the story of a washed-up musician named Rick Power (Paul Rudd) who has given up on his dreams of being a rock star, and has settled as the frontman for a wedding band. When he gets a gig at a fancy wedding, he meets a former boy band singer named Danny (Nick Jonas). The two hit it off and Rick lets Danny hear a song he has written. Months later, Danny records the song and it becomes a major hit, but doesn’t give Rick any credit. As Rick tries to track Danny down to get the credit he’s due, he faces a hard truth about success, fame and creativity and all the complications that come with them.
Carolina Caroline
In the crime thriller Carolina Caroline, Samara Weaving stars as Caroline, a young woman from Texas who meets Oliver (Kyle Gallner), a scammer, and together, they start pulling off scams and robberies across the South with the goal of ending up in South Carolina where Caroline’s mother lives. As their crimes escalate, they decide to flee the country and make a new life for themselves, but things don’t quite end as they planned. The film co-stars Jon Gries and Kyra Sedgewick and is out on demand now.
