After learning about the dog poised to become the world’s oldest dog ever, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos said the possibility of their dog outliving them could be ideal.

This morning, Ripa and Consuelos told Live with Kelly and Mark viewers about Lazare, a 31-year-old French continental toy spaniel who made the news. After a picture of Lazare appeared onscreen, Consuelos explained that the dog species “usually lives around 15 years.”

Ripa asked, “So what’s the secret?”

Consuelos joked, “Champagne, martinis, and cigarettes.”

Eventually Ripa read that “Lazare was recently re-homed after the owner passed away.” Though the owner’s passing was initially met with some sad reactions from the audience, Consuelos revealed that’s what he would want for himself and his dog, Lena.

“See, that’s what I want,” he admitted.

Ripa agreed, “That’s what you want. You want to pre-decease your dog.”

The co-hosts lost their eldest dog, Chewie, in February 2025, which at the time, Consuelos said was “probably one of the toughest things that [they’ve] had to do as a married couple.” This morning, Ripa asked a member of the studio audience if they have experienced losing a dog, which they confirmed.

“So you understand. You want to pre-decease your dog,” she replied. “It’s painful, painful when the dog goes before you.”

Consuelos continued reading about Lazare, noting that he “has some health issues.”

“He’s got a little arthritis, he’s a little deaf, he’s visually impaired. And he has a tongue issue, as you can see in that picture,” he added, as the picture of Lazare returned to the screen. “It permanently hangs out of his mouth, but he looks like he’s having a good time.”

“I mean, we can all agree, that dog looks half his age,” Ripa said, as the audience applauded Lazare. “I wonder what they’re feeding that dog. That’s what I want to know.”

The co-hosts teased that Lazare is a “blue zone dog.”
