In the universe of Apple TV’s For All Mankind, the United States are not the first country to land on the moon; the Soviet Union is. Now, a new companion series is showing that side of the story.

Star City, named for the real area in Moscow where cosmonauts train, premieres on May 29 on Apple TV to coincide with For All Mankind‘s Season 5 finale.

In a preview of the new series, DECIDER’s Meghan O’Keefe writes, “while For All Mankind plays like an optimistic space saga, Star City is a paranoid spy thriller, full of twists and turns that will make audiences head spin.”

Co-creator Ben Nedivi told DECIDER that the idea for Star City came to him and co-creator Matt Wolpert as a result of the research about Soviet cosmonauts they uncovered while working on For All Mankind, particularly the major risks that cosmonauts were taking.

“I mean, they were going on ships that weren’t ready to go up,” Nedivi said. :What the engineers had to go through and just the risks they had to take. So it sort of started from that place of us researching it and learning about it and wanting to tell that story.”
