California is one step closer to allowing local Disney fans to turn their vehicles into rolling tributes to Mickey, Minnie and Co.

State Treasurer Fiona Ma announced Tuesday a new public-private partnership to create a Disneyland-themed specialized license plate that would raise funds for children’s hospitals across the state.

The plate is being developed in collaboration with Disneyland Resort, the California Children’s Hospital Association and the California Health Facilities Financing Authority. It still needs final DMV approval and must reach a minimum of 7,500 preorders before production can begin.

Fans interested in being among the first to get one can join the official Interest List at the website of the Office of the State Treasurer. Those who sign up will receive updates on the design reveal, preorder launch and key milestones.

Sequential license plates would cost a $50 initial fee, plus an annual renewal price of $40.

Personalized plates will set you back an initial $103, with $83 to renew annually. An additional standard registration fee and nonrefundable credit card processing charge is not included in that amount.

Proceeds, after administrative costs, aim to support essential care at 13 California children’s hospitals, including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Rady Children’s Health, UC Davis Children’s Hospital, UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, and MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach.

Funds will help cover essential but uncompensated healthcare services, family support programs, and care for children with complex medical needs.

Disneyland Resort’s new President Jill Estorino said of the unprecedented partnership: “Walt Disney was dedicated to bringing the magic of Disney to children’s hospitals, and we are honored to carry that legacy forward.”

While the initiative marks the first time Disney has partnered with the DMV in California, the entertainment giant did launch a speciality plate in 2021 in conjunction with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to celebrate Disney World’s 50th anniversary, raising over $2 million for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

If you’re a Disneyland passholder, annual visitor, or just love showing SoCal pride on the road, now’s the time to add your name to the Disney driver list.
