Al and Lisa Robertson are baring all about their relationship, including past infidelity.
The couple, who first entered the public eye on A&E’s Duck Dynasty, are sharing more about their marriage and Lisa’s affair with an old boyfriend of hers that took place 15 years after they tied the knot in Lifetime‘s new movie, Faith & Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story. Starring Luke Benward and Haley Ramm as Al and Lisa, the film sees the couple as they “fell hard and fast, believing they had found a once-in-a-lifetime love,” per the network’s description.
“With their marriage and faith hanging by a thread, both must decide if love is worth fighting for, and what it truly means to forgive,” the description adds.
While speaking with Fox News Digital, Al insisted that “everything can be worked through,” noting that “when unfaithfulness happens in a marriage, so many times, that’s the end of it, but it doesn’t have to be.” He said the “reason” that he “was willing to fight for” their marriage was that he “had made a lot of mistakes on [his] own.”
“When I first met Lisa, she was actually a good girl, who had experienced some hard things in her life up until that point, but really was looking for what she called her ‘knight in shining armor,’ someone to take her hand and lead her out of some things,” he explained. “And I just wasn’t that guy in the early years.”
Lisa opened up to Fox News Digital about a past trauma that she believes guided her toward dishonesty later on in life, revealing that “at age 7, [she] was subjected to someone molesting [her].” She said she “began to be dishonest” with “who” and “what” she was, and that she “started on that trail of dishonesty at that point, and that darkness really began there.”
“As I grew older, it got worse and worse,” she added.
Lisa admitted that she “didn’t think” their marriage “would make it” after Al found out about her affair. The two decided on a temporary separation. Al told Fox News Digital that he “was leaning toward thinking that it was probably over” during “the first few weeks” of the separation, adding that he “was just not sure if I could ever fully trust again” and was uncertain as to whether “Lisa really wanted to be in our marriage.” However, Al acknowledged that he had previously been unfaithful during early moments of their relationship, before they got married in 1984, and Lisa had forgiven him.
Lisa ultimately credited faith for her own transformation and also for the survival of her and Al’s marriage, saying that she not only “cried out to God” for forgiveness, but also surrounded herself with other women who sought out faith, and found counseling. Al said he took notice of Lisa’s desire for their marriage to “stay together,” and also cited his own faith in God for the “capacity to forgive infidelity.”
This isn’t the first time that Al and Lisa have disclosed such personal details about their relationship. The couple previously opened up about their relationship in the 2015 book A New Season: A Robertson Family Love Story of Brokenness and Redemption.
Duck Dynasty was revived on A&E last summer through Duck Dynasty: The Revival, though the new series centers on Al’s brother, Willie Robertson, his wife Korie Robertson, and their family.
Faith & Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story premieres on Saturday, May 16th at 8/7 c on Lifetime.
