A six-figure income used to mean you’d made it — but those days are long gone for Californians and residents of several other states across the country.

The $100,000 annual salary many had strived for as a status symbol is now barely enough to make ends meet in the 21st Century, according to a new report from Money Lion.

The once-coveted salary is now considered “lower-middle class” in California and 11 other states.

The report based its findings on the Pew Research Center’s definition of “middle class,” where individuals earned between two-thirds to double the median household income.

One is considered “lower-middle class” if they find themselves in the bottom third of the middle class earning range.

The top three on the list — Massachusetts, New Jersey and Maryland — all have far lower annual costs for necessities (MA – $73,368, NJ — $63,452 and MD — $54,431) than California and Hawaii.

However, the top income for lower-middle class is slightly higher, with $114,339 for Maryland, $115,882 for New Jersey and $116,476 for Massachusetts.
