The ladies of The View found themselves divided Thursday (May 7) morning while discussing whether former state Rep. Katie Porter should continue running for governor of California after leaked videos showed her yelling at her staff. The conversation inspired an interesting confession from Whoopi Goldberg who admitted that she has also yelled at members of her staff.

After sharing a clip of Porter addressing the backlash about her “temperament” during the recent gubernatorial debate, Goldberg quipped, “Maybe she does yell at people. I yell at people, you yell at people, you yell at people, and sometimes it’s not nice.”

Joy Behar did not necessarily agree. “I only yell at my husband,” she responded.

Alyssa Farah Griffin acknowledged “there’s no question” women are “held to a different standard in the public sphere,” but she did not seem to support Porter’s decision to remain in the race. “I think how somebody treats staff under them says so much about their character. We saw the video she berated a staffer in a way I’ve, never in any job in politics, been talked to,” Griffin commented.

Goldberg defended Porter as she shared her own experience.

“You get caught in the moment and, you know, everybody’s got a camera,” she said before adding, “I’m sorry, I have yelled at people who work for me, I have yelled at people.”

Griffin told Goldberg she has “never seen you treat somebody like” Porter did in the leaked videos that show her yelling at staffers. As Goldberg attempted to respond, Griffin playfully challenged her co-host to try it on her. “Do it, Whoopi, do it!”

Goldberg told her co-hosts, “The reason you don’t see it is because I’m very careful when I yell at people.” She noted that she “used to get really angry with people” who goaded her or were “messing” with her. “I used to get it all the time,” she said, adding, “I’m not mad at anybody who steps in poo. I’m not.”

Goldberg went on to defend Porter, who the only woman in the race to become governor of California.

“All I know is, as a human being, I’m subject to the same things she’s subject to. I’m subject to screwing up and messing up and being not the person people want me to be,” Goldberg confessed. “But, if I’m the right person to run that state and I know what I’m doing, I want you to say, ‘Hey, listen I want you to be better but I want you to run the state.'”

Goldberg ended the segment by expressing she has “a lot of faith” in Porter. “Anyway, we live in New York, so what do we care?” she joked as she threw it to commercial.
