There is no way Ghosts Season 5 just got rid of one of our favorite ghosts, right? Right?!
**Spoiler alert for the two-part Season 5 finale of Ghosts, now streaming on Paramount+**
After teasing over the course of the last three seasons that something bad could happen to Pete (Richie Moriarty) — who has the top-tier ghost power of being able to travel off the property — if he doesn’t return to Woodstone Manor in a timely fashion, the latest episodes finally push the fan-favorite phantasm to the edge, with his body fully disappearing before Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and Kyle (Ben Feldman) can make it back.
“It’s been something we’ve teased a couple of times. I believe there’s been at least two instances where Pete has barely made it back to Woodstone before he completely disappeared, so it felt like time to see an answer,” co-creator Joe Wiseman in a post-mort interview with DECIDER. “We don’t want to give away anything, so he could be gone, he could be somewhere, you know, interesting and or scary. We’re not going to reveal a thing, obviously, but we finally are going to answer the question: What would happen if Pete didn’t make it back and disappeared?”
For Wiseman and co-creator Joe Port, it’s a storyline they have wanted to explore since Pete discovered his power back in Season 3, even if they have never been fully agreed on what that means.
“We’ve been discussing it for some time, but I think we knew that we wanted to have it happen at some point. It was like an arrow in our quiver because we had, you know, as Joe said, teased it,” Port added. “But it wasn’t like we always had some plan about what exactly would be. We’ve been talking it out and the best idea wins.”
As for when fans will find that out and whether or not we’ll be getting even more Kyle in Season 6, keep reading to check out DECIDER’s full interview with the pair behind the series.
DECIDER: Gotta start with a biggie, it feels like Kyle might be here to stay. Are we getting Ben Feldman as a full-time cast member in Season 6?
JOE WISEMAN: We definitely think his character is someone useful to have around, you know, in case we want to do stories with Sam where she is distracted or elsewhere. And so we’ve been trying to develop, you know, Kyle’s relationship with Jay and the ghosts and keep that going. So hopefully.
And it seems like he’s going to be stepping in for Sam while she’s away doing Polar Opposites stuff. Is this something that we’re going to try and follow? Are we going to see Sam living a glorious, wonderful Hollywood life potentially in Season 6?
JOE PORT: Haha. I definitely think there’s a lot to send up with the whole Christmas movie industry and Rose McIver has such a rich history with her background from those movies, which we’ve touched on before. In our first Christmas special, we did kind of a darker version of one of those where Trevor was trying to possess Bela’s boyfriend in order to spend time with her on Christmas. I think we’re going to definitely have some fun with Sam participating in this movie and following her journey on it.
You have a lot of fun with the references, you did an It’s a Wonderful Life and Planes Trains and Automobiles moment this season. What’s on the Mount Rushmore of movies you would love to reference or pay homage to?
WISEMAN: Oh, boy. it’s tough, we’re not saying we’re doing any of these, but Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, you know, which we’ve had references to, to those before. Oh boy, I don’t know. I mean there’s so many good movies.
PORT: Groundhog Day is on my Mount Rushmore, and I feel like the whole series kind of draws some inspiration from that, just in terms of people who have forever to try to improve themselves or to make the best use of it as the of eternity as they can.
With the Star Wars thing, is it just a waiting game of finding out when Mark Hamill is available? Is that what we’re doing right here, guys?
WISEMAN: Any time, any time he can show up, we’ll figure out how to get him in there.
Touching back on the Season 5 finale, we go on this little side quest with Jay and we see Pete starting to disappear. How did we land on this potentially disastrous finale for Pete?
WISEMAN: It’s been something we’ve teased a couple of times. I believe there’s been at least two instances where Pete has barely made it back to Woodstone before he completely disappeared. So it felt like time to see an answer. What would happen if Pete completely disappears and you know, people are going to have to wait. It’s a cliffhanger. We don’t want to give away anything. So he could be gone. He could be somewhere, you know, interesting and or scary. We’re not going to reveal a thing, obviously, but we finally are going to answer the question: What would happen if Pete didn’t make it back and disappeared?
I am curious, have you always known what would happen if he did disappear?
PORT: Yeah, we’ve been discussing it for some time, but I think we knew that we wanted to have it happen at some point. It was like an arrow in our quiver because we had, you know, as Joe said, teased it. But it wasn’t like we always had some plan about what exactly would be. We’ve been talking it out and the best idea wins.
I also love getting the mummy back and he was just one of the people who returned. What was it like bringing him back.
WISEMAN: It’s always fun to bring people back who really popped. And you know, we loved Amenhotep and it was but we were kind of like, oh, boy, we sent him away to, you know, a museum far away. So when we figured out, oh, maybe he’s part of a museum tour and they could intersect because we had a story where our characters were going to a museum, we got very excited because we love that character. We love that actor. And it’s always fun when you know, you can think of creative ways to see people. And the same goes for a lot of our, you know, supporting characters, who we see every few episodes. You know, it’s an interesting show because, by premise, it’s very difficult to get people on or off the property. So we always have to think of different ways that and think about how that can, you know, bend the ghost rules or create new ones that don’t contradict the old ones, but sort of expand the world in order to meet new people or get people that we’ve met before back.
PORT: It’s very strange trying to think of stories for Eternally Yours, our new vampire show, because it feels weird that they can just walk outside and go wherever.
WISEMAN: Although we do have it where the vampires have to be invited in somewhere. So that’s almost the reverse of you leaving property.
Obvious question, and it’s probably putting the cart before the horse, but crossover potential?
PORT: Yes.
WISEMAN: There’s been a lot of chatter about that.
PORT: I would love to do that.
I know you guys are just getting started on Season 6 but what are the things you are looking forward to tackling, generally speaking?
WISEMAN: Again, we’re not committed to anything because we’re in the very nascent stage of writing it, but one of the big things that’s been left undone is Sasappis’ death. We really want to tell that story so that’s a priority for us, not a promise that we’re going to do it but that’s a priority for us.
PORT: I think there’s just a lot of ongoing storylines that we’re looking into. We’re talking about meeting some people that we have teased throughout the series. Hetty’s moustachioed sister, Margaret. We’d like to see you know more of all the ghosts’ backstories and lives, and we’ve been talking about a ghost dinosaur.
I love whenever we get familial references in shows because my brain starts to be like, “What redheaded actress is going to come in?” Is there a current shortlist for Margaret or a dream person?
WISEMAN: We talked about actresses
PORT: I don’t think we have a shortlist.
Maybe we start with Jessica Chastain and go from there?
PORT: She came up today. I don’t know if that’s going to happen, but that would be wonderful.
