HBO‘s massive Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, is finally returning this weekend. It’s been over two years since we last saw Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) strike up a secret deal with Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) to end the civil war destroying their families by capitulating to the would-be queen. Alicent agreed to open the gates to King’s Landing and hand over her own son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), to be killed as long as Rhaenyra promised to spare Alicent, her daughter Helaena (Phia Saban), and granddaughter and to end the bloodshed. The only problem? Sneaky, scheming Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) has already spirited the wounded Aegon out of King’s Landing.
House of the Dragon Season 2 ended on a frustrating cliffhanger for fans, promising a major battle without delivering it. The good news is House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal knows folks are waiting to be blown away by the catastrophic Battle of the Gullet, a naval encounter that will pit Rhaenyra’s Hand, Corlys “the Sea Snake” Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), against his nemesis, Triarchy admiral Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn). The new season of House of the Dragon wastes no time getting into the headiest and bloodiest chapters of George R.R. Martin‘s “Dance of the Dragons.”
