For a team that scored only two goals in its first five matches, Gotham’s third straight win and third straight clean sheet Sunday was certainly a boost.
The defending champs seem to be finding an offensive groove after posting a 1-0 win over Racing Louisville (1-2-5) at Sports Illustrated Stadium, making for six goals in their past three contests.
In the 16th minute, rookie forward Jordynn Dudley dribbled down the right side of the field, used a hesitation fake to speed past her defender and sent a cross that found Jaedyn Shaw in the box for the tap-in.
The two were the saviors Sunday, and Dudley continued to prove that she is a legitimate competitor and physical offensive threat for the team.

The former Florida State star has grown more comfortable with her team, adding her second assist of the season in her third consecutive start Sunday. She scored her first professional goal just a game prior.
“Definitely a lot more comfortable,” Dudley said after the win. “I think we’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with each other on the field, especially me coming in. They’ve taught me a lot — speaking and just connecting.”
“I think we still have yet to see the best from her,” Midge Purce added.
However, for a team still trying to turn around its offense, and one that had several chances in a game largely in its hands — controlling as much as 72 percent of possession — Gotham will have to figure out how to sustain this and consistently put more goals on the board.
There were several unlucky bounces and lost opportunities, including consecutive attempts in the 27th minute.
Winger Guro Reiten found Shaw on the left side for a shot from the center of the box that was initially stopped by Racing Louisville goalie Jordyn Bloomer. It rebounded to Rose Lavelle, who has been on a tear scoring goals in the past two games, but she failed to quickly place the shot and Bloomer saved it again.
Shortly after, Gotham’s other top scorer Esther González missed a header from the box after a cross by Purce.
“Yeah, I think we could’ve had more,” Dudley said. “But I think we created some good chances with what we were given. I think we really need to focus defensively with the physicality and stuff, and I think we did that.”

In the second half, Lavelle continued to find her spots in the box to pressure Bloomer, including during a corner when she powered a left-footed shot from the box, but nothing came of it.
Gotham had 14 shot attempts with four shots on goal and three corners.
The comfort Dudley mentioned is how coach Juan Carlos Amorós believes more offensive opportunities have been created and have paid off for all his players.
“Making sure we create those connections and that chemistry,” Amorós said. “Understanding movements in and around the box, and I think that’s very important because that’s the work we put in, but then the players also feel free. I think when they feel free on the pitch, they have to think less on their defending … which allows them to be more free on the offensive side and understand each other’s positions and strengths.”
Lavelle was later subbed out in the 72nd minute after going down and seemingly feeling pain in her left knee. However, Amorós believes it’s “nothing too serious” and explained the team wanted to get her tended to while leading the game.
