LA Mayor race a toss-up as Angelenos head to the polls — ...

The three LA mayoral candidates are in a tight race.

Several unanticipated outcomes are suddenly in play in the California governor’s race and the Los Angeles mayor’s race following the release of two polls last week which threw those races wide open.

In the mayor’s race, a poll from The UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies showed that Mayor Karen Bass, former reality-star Spencer Pratt, and councilmember Nithya Raman were effectively tied, erasing what earlier polls showed was a sizable lead for Bass. The Berkeley IGS poll showed that in the governor’s race former U.S. Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra was leading with 25% of likely voters followed by Republican commentator Steve Hilton (21%) and billionaire investor Tom Steyer (19%), suggesting that two Democrats making the run-off was still a possibility.

In California, the top two vote-getters in the primary – regardless of party preference — make the runoff.

However, a California Post poll conducted with McLaughlin & Associates released on Friday, showed Pratt with a small lead in the mayor’s race (30.1%) compared to Bass (29.5%). Raman trailed both with 23.4% support. In the governor’s race the California Post poll showed Hilton and Steyer tied for first place at 25% support each while Becerra, who’s been considered a favorite to win, came in third at 19%.

The short of it: this could go any number of ways.
