Margo’s Got Money Troubles, sure, but Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Kenny (Greg Kinnear), they’ve got marital issues.
**Spoilers ahead for the Season 1 finale of Margo’s Got Money Troubles, now streaming on Apple TV**
While fans may have surmised that it was Mark (Michael Angarano), Margo’s (Elle Fanning) baby daddy who called Child Protective Services after Jinx (Nick Offerman) relapsed and overdosed in their apartment in Episode 7, the Season 1 finale, “Lock & Load,” reveals that it was actually the newest member of the family, Kenny, who threw Margo’s world into a tailspin. Well, to be fair, into more of a tailspin than it already was in.
For the actors who play the newlyweds, it was just as dramatic to read the finale script and find out just how far things go and that, with a confirmed Season 2 now on the way, things are going to get so much messier for what is supposed to still be their honeymoon phase.
“It’s terrible, and it’s such a betrayal for Shyanne, and for Kenny and their marriage, and for the family,” Kinnear told DECIDER in a post-mort chat. “He’s been kind of brought into this family to some degree nd so I feel pretty mortified. But at the same time, I think he genuinely feared for the baby. And I think that when you really consider the arc of where this show goes and what he’s seeing through his eyes and his awareness of the risks to the child, it’s certainly not the choice I would have made, but I do think it wasn’t a huge leap.”
He’s not wrong. Kenny is still new to the family and while he loves Shyanne and clearly has an affection for Margo and Bodhi, he is also a youth pastor and understands how imperative safety in the home is for any child. For Kinnear, it’s hard to justify it but he does at least understand and see why Kenny pushes back.
“Great writing can do this. You know, I think he gets his chance to explain himself and I don’t think he wins the argument, but I think he’s able to make the argument,” he added, saying more will come in Season 2.
For more on the Season 1 finale and Pfeiffer and Kinnear’s thoughts on where the show goes for its second season,, check out DECIDER’s full queue and a with the pair below.
DECIDER: Michelle, there is a scene in Episode 8, where Shyanne is in the bathroom with Lace, and it is so beautiful. You can really see that she’s grappling with a lot, and she’s internalizing a lot, and she apologizes. What did you feel like she was internalizing and apologizing for in that moment?
MICHELLE PFEIFFER: Everything, I think. Feeling you’re responsible, having a child when she wasn’t prepared. Feeling like a failure, really. And the fact that now her daughter has come to this point and is now being threatened, not being able to help her more, not being able to financially help her more out of the situation. And so desperately wanting to save her. And I think she feels responsible and ashamed.
Arguably, the person who probably should be apologizing the most is Kenny. We find out that Kenny was the person who called CPS. Greg, were you able to justify that as the person behind the character?
GREG KINNEAR: I mean, it’s bad, it’s terrible, and it’s such a betrayal for Shyanne and Kenny and their marriage and for the family, he’s been kind of brought into this family to some degree. I felt pretty mortified, but at the same time, I think he genuinely feared for the baby. And I think that when you really consider the arc of where this show goes and what he’s seeing through his eyes and his, awareness of the risks to the child. It’s certainly not the choice I would have made, but I do think it wasn’t a huge leap. Great writing can do this. You know, I think he gets his chance to explain himself. I don’t think he wins the argument but I think he’s able to make the argument.
PFEIFFER: I also think that these characters are the people who — and he says it, you say it, you say you love her too much. You would never have come to this point where you would need to call in social services. But he’s coming at it from an outsider [perspective]. And he’s not desensitized. He doesn’t love Jinx, he is seeing it from a very pragmatic point of view. So he’s not as emotionally immersed and clouded as all of us are. Not that it was the right thing to do, mind you, but yeah, that’s where he’s coming from.
There’s a certain level of closure for Margo, but I feel like there’s not that much closure for Kenny and for Shyanne. We know we’re getting a second season, what do you think and hope happens next?
PFEIFFER: I hope they’re able to work things out. But I think that this is a big betrayal to recover from and we’ll just have to see.
KINNEAR: He’s got a lot of digging [out of a hole]. That’s a long ladder out. And I just think it’s a terrifyingly long climb back out. But we’ll see. For my own dreams and wishes for Kenny, I could see him developing his own wrestling skills to try to win the girl back. So, you know, look out for Kenny in the ring.
