Why Alex Murdaugh won't be won't free anytime soon — desp...

Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions were sensationally overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday — but he will not be released from prison anytime soon.

Murdaugh, 57, will have the opportunity for a new trial after the state’s highest court ruled 5-0 that a county clerk had improperly influenced his dramatic trial and tossed his murder convictions.

However, even if he is acquitted, he will remain behind bars because he pleaded guilty to separate charges for financial crimes.

“He’s still going to die in prison — but Murdaugh’s position has always been that he’s a thief and not a murderer,” former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told The Post.

Murdaugh, who was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole for the grisly 2021 murders, is also serving concurrent 40-year federal and 27-year state sentences for the financial crimes.

“While we respectfully disagree with the Court’s decision, my Office will aggressively seek to retry Alex Murdaugh for the murders of Maggie and Paul as soon as possible,” state Attorney General Alan Wilson said in a statement after the court’s bombshell decision.

“Let me be clear — this decision does not mean Murdaugh will be released. He will remain in prison for his financial crimes. No one is above the law and, as always, we will continue to fight for justice.”

Prosecutors argued that Murdaugh executed his wife and son to cover up his crimes in bilking clients out of millions of dollars.
