Sean Barnard previews Wednesday’s WNBA matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Los Angeles Sparks and provides his best pick.
Closing down tonight’s four-game WNBA slate, the Indiana Fever will take on the Los Angeles Sparks. Both organizations hold deep playoff aspirations, each ranking in the top six in championship odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. Neither got off to their desired start, with each team dropping their season-opening matchup and entering tonight with a 0-1 record.
Looking at the odds for tonight, the Fever enter as narrow 1.5-point favorites with -120 Moneyline odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Sparks hold +100 odds of pulling off the upset, with the game total set at 186.5 points.
Let’s get into a pick and prediction for this Fever at Sparks matchup.
The Indiana Fever took a step forward last season, going 24-20 and making the playoffs for the second consecutive season. They were eliminated by the Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals of the playoffs and have made some roster tweaks to further move forward this year. Indiana opened the season with a thrilling 107-104 loss to the Dallas Wings. Dallas shot 52% from beyond the three-point arc and led for 77% of the matchup.
Plenty of last year’s core remains in place as the organization continues to build around Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston as its foundation. Kelsey Mitchell, Sophie Cunningham, Lexie Hull and Damiris Dantas were each re-signed from last year’s roster. Indiana also brought in free agent additions Monique Billings, Tyasha Harris, Myisha Hines-Allen and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. The Fever have built a clear identity around their offensive style, but still hold some defensive concerns that did not appear to be fixed from the 107 points they allowed in the season-opener.
Kelsey Mitchell got off on the right foot, dropping a team-high 30 points in the season-opener. But Caitlin Clark still headlines the attack, coming off a 20-point and seven-assist performance against the Wings. Aliyah Boston pitched in 23 points, and there were some overall positive signs from the bench unit.
The Los Angeles Sparks took a step forward from their 8-32 record in 2024 to go 21-23 last year. They finished just shy of postseason contention and will hope to further build off this in 2026. Los Angeles fell short in the season opener, a 105-78 loss to the Las Vegas Aces. While the Aces are second in WNBA title odds on DraftKings Sportsbook for a reason, this was a disheartening loss in which Las Vegas led from wire-to-wire. The Sparks’ offense looked clunky, and they shot just 37% from the field and 29% from beyond the three-point arc as a team.
Los Angeles made a splash this offseason by bringing in Nneka Ogwumike. The 10-time All-Star signed as a free agent after averaging 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds last season with the Storm. The Sparks also added Ta’Niya Latson and Chance Gray in the draft and signed Erica Wheeler. The most polarizing move was the organization’s decision to trade away Rickea Jackson to the Chicago Sky with Ariel Atkins as the return. Atkins is a five-time All-Defensive team selection and a 36.0% career three-point shooter who will play a major role in the rotation for a team that lacked perimeter defense last year.
There is not a ton to take away from the opening season blowout. But the vision is still there for this core with Kelsey Plum, Nneka Ogwumike, and Dearica Hamby headlining the production. The trio combined for 58 points in the matchup with the Aces. It is a long season, so Los Angeles will largely view the loss as a throwaway game as it attempts to get on track for tonight.
Expect more spirit from both teams tonight compared to what was shown in their season openers. My lean is toward the Fever picking up the victory in the matchup. I hold a bit more belief in the supporting cast of this Indiana roster, and it is tough not to be concerned by the level Los Angeles showed in Game 1.
But my best bet for this matchup is for the game total to go over the 186.5 line. These are two dynamic offenses with legitimate defensive concerns. Each allowed 105+ points in their season opener after finishing in the bottom six in opponents’ points allowed last year. Los Angeles especially bled points, giving up an average of 88.2 points per game last season. Ariel Atkins should provide some level of increased resistance, but it is worth noting she is in the later stages of her career and the issues need more than a one player fix.
Indiana was far from a stellar defensive team last year, but showed even brighter red flags in the opening matchup. The Wings shot an impressive 57% from the floor, with three players scoring 20+ points. Caitlin Clark comes with her own defensive shortcomings, and Indiana was unable to scheme ways to hide her at a frequent enough rate. This will be a clear point of emphasis for the Sparks tonight.
Expect both these teams to get up and down the floor at a high pace and pour in points in the matchup. 186.5 is a high line by WNBA standards, but rightfully so based on this matchup. Both of these teams can score at an extremely high rate and struggle on the defensive end. Count on both sides pouring on points tonight and for 100+ points to be attainable for both sides.
