Charlie Cummings offers a preview and prediction for Tuesday’s Champions League Quarterfinal match between Liverpool and PSG.
It all comes down to Tuesday. The defending UEFA Champions League winners, Paris Saint-Germain, are 90 minutes of football away from advancing. Standing in their way is a talented and experienced Liverpool squad that won’t go down without a fight. This is going to be electric.
Liverpool is a +140 favorite to win the return leg on DraftKings Sportsbook, and PSG is at +155 odds. There are +310 odds for a draw, which would see Paris Saint-Germain through to the next round. The defending champs are -700 to advance, while a Liverpool upset is priced at +450.
The first leg in Paris was absolute domination. The 2-0 final line in favor of PSG doesn’t scream blowout, but Liverpool wasn’t even close. PSG outshot them 18-3 and managed six shots on goal while Liverpool had none. To add insult to injury, the defending champs piled up 40 touches in the Liverpool box while the road side only had nine. All in all, a clinical effort, punctuated by goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Now the two teams are heading to Anfield, with Liverpool looking for a significant upset. Plain and simple, this Liverpool attack has to be better. Last time out, they went with a 3-4-1-2 alignment; Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, and Dominik Szoboszlai failed to generate much of anything at the top. Perhaps Arne Slot will mix it up there this time around. One last spin for old Mo Salah, perhaps? A turn for big signees Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak to make a difference? There’s no easy answer here.
For PSG, the goal is for a repeat performance if possible. Their championship defense, led by Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, must lead the way once again. Liverpool’s attack is going to come out aggressive in order to erase a two-goal deficit, so PSG must be on their toes, not their heels. To break the pressure, the midfield has to come in handy, especially Vitinha in the middle. And nothing breaks the spirit like an early road goal with the home team trying to mount a comeback. Ousmane Dembélé, Doué, and Kvaratskhelia have to be ready for counterattacks.
When two teams of this quality meet and one is desperate, that desperation tends to play a significant role. It could go disastrously for Liverpool, but the likelier scenario is that their constant pressure turns into key goals. It may not amount to a full comeback, but the home side is more than capable of a slim victory.
