Ciaran Doyle gives his best bet on DraftKings Sportsbook for Monday’s FIFA World Cup match between Belgium and Egypt.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has finally arrived, and the opening match of Group G will feature one of the favorites, Belgium, facing off against Egypt.
Let’s dive into my favorite bet for this match.
Belgium enters the World Cup ranked ninth in the FIFA rankings, while Egypt comes in at 29th in the world.
Belgium had a huge letdown in the 2022 World Cup, getting knocked out in the group stage. They will want to right those wrongs in 2026, and what better way to start that process than with a win in their opening match against Egypt?
This is likely the last dance in the World Cup for some of their best players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois. The golden age of Belgian soccer hasn’t led to any trophies yet, but they have a decent shot at glory in 2026.
This is a team with a lot of talent in midfield and up top, but the defense is somewhat unknown in major tournaments. Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans will likely play a lot of minutes in the center of the park alongside De Bruyne, while their attacking options are plentiful with talents like Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard in the mix. This is a squad who is primed for a deep run, but I’m not sure if they have what it takes to lift the trophy.
They had a solid UEFA qualifying run, going undefeated in eight matches, winning five of those, and ultimately topping their group. The Belgians scored 29 goals, conceding only seven.
Now, let’s look at Egypt. They won their group in African qualifying to book a ticket to their fourth-ever World Cup. In three previous appearances they were knocked out in the group stage. In fact, Egypt are still looking for their first-ever World Cup victory. This team will be led by Mohamed Salah, in what will likely also be his last dance at a World Cup. The Egyptians actually have a decent amount of talent that can hurt Belgium, as Man City’s Omar Marmoush will also be featuring up top.
Despite that, I don’t think they have enough firepower across the rest of the pitch, which is why I’m picking Belgium to get the three points in this one.
