Garion Thorne details his picks for DraftKings MLB Grand Slam Payout promotion on tonight’s slate.
DraftKings has a new promotion in May. It’s the MLB Grand Slam Payout.
The concept is simple. Opt-in and get a MLB Grand Slam Payout token. Use that token on a single wager or for a parlay on a player to hit a home run, and if that home runs ends up being a grand slam, receive a share of $250,000 in bonus bets — or more! Emphasis on the “and more” part of that sentence. The prize pool was at $1.5 million when CJ Abrams hit the month’s first grand slam on Wednesday night in a 15-2 rout of the Twins.
That does mean we’re back to “just” $250,000 for today’s slate, but it also means the grand slam seal has been broken. Let’s hope there’s more winners on the way. Heck, let’s hope it’s one of these two picks.
Let’s dive in.
Maybe this is recency bias, but let’s quickly recap Rhett Lowder’s last start, shall we?
After surrendering five runs to the Pirates in the first inning of his outing on Saturday, Lowder responded in the second with three straight walks to load the bases. It was at that point the former seventh-overall pick was removed from the game, but that didn’t stop the Reds’ bullpen from also walking the next four batters. For those trying to keep track at home, that’s four straight plate appearances with the bases loaded. It didn’t result in a grand slam, but that’s the type of golden opportunity we’re hunting with these picks.
If the Cubs get such an opportunity today, I think they take advantage — especially with the wind expected to be blowing out of Wrigley this afternoon. My eye is specifically drawn to Seiya Suzuki, who has been on an absolute tear as of late. Suzuki missed the first couple weeks of the season due to an injury suffered in the WBC, but since April 21, the outfielder is slashing .352/.429/.722 with six home runs and a .370 ISO. Despite only appearing in 24 contests in 2026, Suzuki also currently ranks second on Chicago’s roster in at-bats with the bases loaded (7). Seems like he’s just always around the action.
I was really sweating the choice between Harper and his teammate Kyle Schwarber. However, the decision to side with the former first-overall pick isn’t actually that difficult in retrospect. First and foremost, Schwarber is always one of the most popular home run bets on the DraftKings Sportsbook, so even if he did hit a grand slam, you’d be splitting the pot with thousands of people. Secondly, I truly believe Harper’s in a better position to specifically come up with the bases loaded — at least that’s how it’s worked out so far in 2026.
Batting from the three-spot in the Phillies’ lineup, behind a guy like Schwarber who owns a massive 15.8% walk rate, Harper just tends to come to the plate with runners on base on more often than not. His five at-bats with the bases loaded this season are the most of any Philadelphia hitter, and five times as many as Schwarber’s taken, as he’s only gotten the opportunity once.
Now that that’s settled, let’s talk matchup. J.T. Ginn is the perfect opponent for a left-handed hitter with some pop. The A’s right-hander just hasn’t been able to consistently retire LHBs throughout his career. In fact, Ginn comes into this tilt in Philly having conceded 1.99 home runs per nine within the split across his three years in the majors. He’s also allowed opposing lefties to combine for a .306/.388/.554 slash line.
