Dylan Cease, Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees ($10,000) — Sure, the Yankees have a potent offense and will punish mistakes. New York is first in ISO, third in wOBA and third in wRC+. That said, the Yankees are prone to swinging and missing, ranking seventh in strikeouts. That’s not a good thing against Cease because he is boasting a robust 34.6% strikeout rate. The average exit velocity is 87.5 mph while the barrel rate is only 4.2%. He’s allowed only one home run in 52.1 innings. On the season, Cease has put up over 20 FPTS six times, with three of those outings over 30 FPTS.
Ryne Nelson, Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Francisco Giants ($6,700) — Nelson hasn’t been great but hasn’t been terrible either. A ringing endorsement! When looking for cheap options, though, that’s often the case. On the season, the strikeout rate isn’t bad at 22.4% while the K-BB% is 15.1%. He does allow hard contact with a 45.5% hard hit rate and 91 mph average exit velocity while allowing a 21.9 degree launch angle and 11.9% barrel rate. The production has been volatile this season with four outings of fewer than 10 FPTS, including a low of -18.6 FPTS. Gross. That said, he’s gone over 20 FPTS four times, with two of those occurring in the two most recent outings. This is primarily a matchup play as San Francisco is 24th in ISO, 29th in wOBA and 27th in wRC+.
Konnor Griffin, Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals ($4,200) — After a slow start to season and batting towards the bottom of the lineup, Griffin has heated up and has been batting second to fifth recently. It took him 21 games to hit his first home run, but since then, he’s slashed .325/.374/.518 with a .193 ISO in 91 plate appearances. He’s racked up three home runs, 12 runs, 12 RBI and six stolen bases over that span. The slash has been BABIP-fueled at .414, so regression will likely come at some point, but that will likely occur over a long period of time. Who knows? It’s baseball. Against left-handed pitching, the ISO is .152 with a 138 wRC+. Matthew Liberatore is allowing a 91.8 mph average exit velocity, 13.6 degree launch angle and 9.9% barrel rate. Against righties, the K-BB% is only 5.9% while the FIP is 4.46.
Hyeseong Kim, Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres ($3,000) — Kim is usually not a player I like to roster since the bat speed is only 66.6 mph, his average exit velocity is only 85.6 mph and the barrel rate is 4.1%. That said, he’s in a Dodgers lineup which could turn over plenty, and he does have one home run, 13 runs, 10 RBI and five stolen bases in 107 plate appearances. The sprint speed of 28.7 feet per second is in the 88th percentile and the walk rate is 9.3%. Griffin Canning has a whopping 16.4% walk rate. Granted, it’s a small sample size of 11 innings, but lack of control against a potent Dodgers lineup doesn’t portend for good things.
Julio Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox ($4,400) — Rodriguez has crushed left-handed pitching this season with a 182 wRC+ and .349 ISO. Five of his seven home runs hit on the season have come against lefties. Anthony Kay has struggled against righties. A match made in heaven! The FIP is 6.91 while the K-BB% is -1.4%. All six home runs allowed have come off the bat of righties.
Nathan Church, St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates ($3,000) — Church bats seventh in the lineup and doesn’t have eye-popping stats at a .246/.284/.399 slash line with a .152 ISO. He has five home runs, 17 runs, 18 RBI and four stolen bases in 148 plate appearances. Against right-handed pitching, the ISO is .185, and all five home runs have come against them. Mitch Keller has a K-BB% of 9.2% with a 3.94 FIP against lefties. All three home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.
