We’ve reached the third major championship of the PGA TOUR season, and the attention of the golf world will be on Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, which will host the 2026 U.S. Open. It’s the 126th U.S. Open and the sixth hosted at Shinnecock Hills, which is the only venue to host the event in three different centuries.
The course is expected to play extremely difficult and be a tough test for the best golfers in the world. The course is famous for its thick fescue rough, rolling terrain, and sometimes windy conditions off the Atlantic. The defending champion is J.J. Spaun, who won last year at Oakmont Country Club, just outside Pittsburgh. Brooks Koepka won the most recent U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in 2018.
While the total purse for 2026 has yet to be announced, the total purse was $21.5 million in 2025, with $4.3 million awarded to the winner.
