This is an alternate team total for the Cubs, as they’re currently set at 3.5 runs at -135. I think the offense will be out in full force tonight against the Dodgers and starter Emmet Sheehan. Sheehan hasn’t been sharp through 20 innings, owning a 5.85 ERA with an xERA of 4.78 and a 5.15 FIP. He’s already allowed four home runs in his starts and has issued eight walks. He’s a heavy four-seam fastball thrower and the Cubs, dating back to last season, have a combined .341 wOBA and a .205 ISO against it.
Once Sheehan departs, he’ll give way to a suddenly struggling Dodgers bullpen. Over the past week, their relievers have combined for an 8.16 ERA, an xERA of 5.95, and a 1.8 HR/9. The Cubs have been locked in at the plate, scoring five runs in four straight games. It’s a perfect night at the ballpark in LA, with temperatures in the mid-60’s and a slight wind going out toward right field.
Rice has been hitting for a ton of power thus far, which is why he’s recorded 2+ total bases in 12 of his 24 games this season. Of his 23 hits, 11 have gone for extra bases. Tonight, he’ll face Lance McCullers Jr and the Houston Astros in Houston. McCullers continues to struggle as he did last season, and against lefties, has a .341 wOBA with a 4.42 FIP. McCullers mainly throws a cutter and sinker, combined for 56.8% of his pitches. Rice has superb numbers against both pitches, with a .501 wOBA and a .455 ISO against the cutter and a .476 wOBA with a .250 ISO against the sinker. I’m a fan of the Yankees team total as well, and Rice should be part of that.
This seems like quite a lofty total for a pitcher who hasn’t recorded more than 14 outs in three of his four starts this season. Bello has been terrible this season, posting a 6.75 ERA with an xERA of 6.85 and a 5.77 FIP. He’s putting a lot of traffic on base with a 5.7 BB/9, which is constantly putting him in trouble spots. Now he faces an Orioles team that’s averaging 5.2 runs over its last five games. They also have a high walk rate against righties thus far with a 10.5% BB%.
The cherry on top of all this is that there is potential for some heavy rain to quickly make its way through. If a delay occurs, Bello could go under his outs total be default if it’s long enough. This sets up as a strong spot to take the under.
